Default 991.1 PSE question

A simple question I home someone with PSE on a 991.1 with a manual transmission can answer:

When the PSE button is OFF (quiet mode) and you are under hard acceleration does the exhaust "open up" and become as loud as when you have the PSE button ON?

Yes. The case with manual and PDK's. The valves open under hard acceleration, even with the button "off".

The PSE "on" button keeps them open at all times. Even low RPM's.

How about driving with the 'sport' versus 'sport plus' mode on? Does the exhaust sound the same at all RPM levels? I have a MT991.1 and it doesn't seem to sound pop and crackle when letting off the gas in the sport mode as it does in the sport plus mode, especially at lower RPMs. Can that be correct or am I just not hearing it correctly ??

that difference is as a result of the ECU maps for sport vs sport+ that increase lift-off throttle overrun/burble...

Thanks guys.

I recently had the PSE button installed along with the wiring harness and associated parts so that I could control the valves on my Akrapovic system. I thought Porsche shipped us a bad solenoid or something but it sounds like this behavior is normal.

I connected a vacuum gauge to one of the valves and took a video which shows what is going on with the vacuum under acceleration.

Has anyone tried to "fix" this? I would prefer the valves stay in "quiet" mode even under hard acceleration so I can be more stealthy. Or at least less antisocial

they open for good reason to reduce back pressure on the engine in mid-high rpm...

as a point of reference 997.2 GT3 owners, with the simple application of a rubber nipple, were able to disable this feature in order to pass sound at
various tracks, but it was subsequently considered as harmful to the engine/
exhaust system

if its too loud, I would suggest that the best solution is to install a non-PSE OEM exhaust.

Happy to trade with anyone who wants a non PSE S center muffler. I understand it's a straight swap.

So you are saying that the 'pop and gurgle ' sound is in fact less when only in sport mode versus sport plus mode when letting off the gas?

yes , with factory PSE turned on , if you press the " sport plus " mode button - avail only if you have the " Sport Chrono " option/feature - there is still significant loudish popping / gurgling off-throttle even at 10 mph parking lot trundling around speeds , but most of that those ECU-timing/ fueling- " manufactured " sounds and esp their dB level go way down as soon as you press " sport " button which comes std on all 991s..so a 991.1 with only the factory installed PSE but without factory " Sport Chrono " package will never sound as aggressive in " around town " usage when PSE is " ON "

Summarizing when PSE is manually switched " ON " , it has THREE sound profiles in stop and go low speed ( 5-25 mph " neighborhood " ) driving :

1) barely louder than stock exhaust and no burbles if in the default " econo " mode
2) sl louder and a few faint burbles in " sport " button mode
3) noticably louder still and very " farty " in the " sport plus " mode if you have it
