I am fortunate that my wife drives a 7 MT very well. She did The Tail of The Dragon last week. I can sleep when on a long trip.

In manual mode, PDK may refuse to downshift if the resulting RPM would jeopardize the engine.

In manual mode, PDK may automatically downshift if RPMs fall below a certain threshold.

Otherwise, to my knowledge, in most operating conditions, PDK in manual mode will not automatically change gear.

The exception is maximum cooling thermal management condition, in which the PDK control unit can signal the DME control unit to upshift to reduce torque and and thus temperature and then downshift again once the thermal condition has cleared. I suspect this is what you may be experiencing.

I suggest looking for "reduce engine load" messages or similar in the multifunction display in your dashboard. You could also consider connecting an OBD reader to the car to monitor transmission temperatures when you find this occurring. Be advised that I think this condition and message are considered transient and thus not persisted to OBD fault memory; thus they wouldn't be seen if you were to connect an OBD reader to query the car after the fact.

I see that you're in England. If I'm not mistaken, most of the 991's shipped there do not have a center radiator installed. Ironically, the solution to your PDK problem might not be a software change, but rather the installation of a third radiator.

Cheers!

Regarding the latter point, I rarely ever drive in sport+ on the street, so maybe that's why I haven't experienced it.

My experience in Sport auto mode is exactly like Archimedes, the vehicle will get up to 6th pretty easily when not under heavy load, but it does sit there in 6th for a long while before going that extra gear into 7th....and like Archimedes said, I have to be cruising for a long time just north of 70 mph before it will then pop on up into 7th gear.

I really don't want it to change gear for me in manual!

Some questions then:

1) do the gt3 and gt3 rs suffer the same problem? Software swap if not?

2) is the kick down activated by a switch? Or actual position of the acceleration pedal? Could this be disabled/modified?

3) suppose there is nothing you can do with the auto upshift?

4) would any programming specialists be able to fix these issues with new maps/data?

Thanks in advance

Julian
there are clearly 2 types of accelerator pedal:

991.423.021.01 IXXV/487
991.423.022.01 IXXV/250

not clear which variant is the PDK and which is the manual ... just fyi

3rd radiator will not help PDK temps, its a separate system AFIAK but I dont think the OP is complaining about a condition incurred through PDK temp control

That is so odd. My car never does that.

Test drove a 991 GT3, it doesn't even have the detent for kick down in the accelerator (Tried it with the car turned off), it's just a smooth action down to the floor like a manual MT accelerator. My guess is it has no function for auto up/down shifting based on that detent.

Interestingly enough, I did get back from a track event and pressed that kick down detent multiple times in S+ Manual mode, but no downshifting. Was coming out of a hairpin corner, rolling into full throttle and hit kick down. Noticed then I was a gear too high and had to manually downshift. I think RPM was around 4k at the time I hit the detent.

I also bounced off the rev limiter on a straight briefly on the long straight, also in 3rd gear, kick down detent was pressed as I felt the click, then the solid floor under that. Quickly upshifted. Those were the only times that happened, was a watching more closely after that (was first session with the car on the track for the first time)

Maybe it depends on the gear too? I didn't want to try again with either scenario that day. My car is a 2013 C4S with sport chrono, SPASM, PDK. Also not sure if options matter.

+1 my car does that in normal, but not sport and in sports + it revs crazy high. It also locks out 7th in both unless I'm going over 70 and by then I usually have up shifted with the paddles on the freeway.
I also have to push really hard to get the car to kick down when in non manual modes. Like a good 8-10 lb of foot pressure I would guess.

There's definitely a bug in the code somewhere. About 0.5% of the time, the PDK in my 981BS mistakenly uses the same shift point map in Sport mode that it does in Normal mode. The LED on the button is on, the MF steering wheel says 'Sport', but it granny-shifts all the way to 7th at any speed over about 35 MPH. Turning Sport on and off has no effect at all when this happens.

This behavior tends to persist until the next drive cycle. This condition is very rare (at least in my case) and not reproducible at will.

A couple of weeks ago, a guy started a thread "Manual 991 Owners, Are there many of us?". You know, a show of hands from the ~10% that have 3 pedals.

And so we were having our chat, until a bunch of people jumped in to go on (and on and on) about how this debate (nobody was debating) was so retarded, PDK is what F1 cars have, it's what you graduate to, manual drivers are posers, PDK driver's d*cks are bigger, etc., etc., etc.

But after reading this thread, it doesn't sound like PDK is any fun at all. Where is all that effusive praise now?

@stil_1 - that's fantastic information about the gt3.

My plan now is to see if there is a separate transmission ecu that is responsible for these issues, and if there is what chance there is of installing a gt3 tcu instead, along with the appropriate throttle pedal.

Things I need to know are:

1) if there is a separate tcu how/is that coded to the main ecu.
2) is there a microswitch or other extra output on the throttle of the ordinary PDK cars that the gt3 does not have.
3) if 2 = yes then how is that accommodated in the loom and thus answer the question of whether the gt3 tcu would even plug in.
4) does the different gear ratio setup in the gt3 impact shift points? I guess not but my brain isn't clear about this...

@richAA - it's not actually quite as simple as that, unfortunately. For me the PDK box offers a glimpse at the next generation of transmissions. It outperforms the manual, is still great fun and feels amazing to use. The problem for me was inbuilt at a software level, not a hardware one. To me it's as clear as day but Porsche don't share the thought process I was having-

To be clear for me the ultimate would be PDK but where the paddles replace the gearstick. I don't need anything other than that. I changed gear for 20 years previously with a clutch press and a shift with my arm. Just having to flip the paddle would be a welcome improvement to this, thank you Porsche. I will decide when and where but if you could take care of the eye-blink shift and the throttle blip and the clutch for me then that's just amazing! But please butt out of choosing my gear for me because you can't see the road, the conditions or my driving mood....

Same with my 2015 GTS. My car has never shifted into 7th while driving in auto mode if I am in Sport or Sport Plus mode. It only shifts into 7th if I am in auto and normal mode.
