Default 991 C2S Front/Rear Cameras + DVR by Musicar Northwest

Another project has come to Musicar this week from a fellow Rennlister. We're going to be adding a front and rear camera system, front and rear DVR system, and low-profile front license plate mount to this 2013 Agate Grey Carrera S Coupe.

The main goal here is to integrate the the systems in a way that keeps the equipment as low profile and factory-like as possible without sacrificing effectiveness. We're also going to be piping the camera video into the factory PCM screen, as well as converting some of the blank buttons in the console to be used as our forced camera toggles.

Here's the equipment list for the project:
  • Nav-TV PCM3.1 XG-CAM
  • Nav-TV Camera 6 (x2)
  • Blackvue 2CH Wi-Fi DVR System
  • Blackvue Power Magic Pro
  • Skene Design License Plate Mount

More pictures tomorrow as this project gets underway.

One of the biggest challenges with this project is the front camera. Typically the camera would mount in the upper portion of the center bumper vent, but with the low-profile plate we would be blocking the camera's view.

Instead we fabricated a composite mount that attached the camera to the plate mount itself. It's using separate hardware so that the plate can be removed/replaced without the camera going anywhere.

Amazing. Nice work. Unbelievable craftsmanship.

I must ask, what's the reason for the DVR and camera?? I can see a backup camera. But recording ability? Curious.

Thanks!

As always, great looking work. I really like the way you are able to solve problems. Waiting eagerly to see what comes next!

Thanks STG991! Nowadays it's a good idea to have at least a front dash cam just to record any events you might need to playback(accidents, traffic violations, etc...). Just good insurance when someone attempts to place blame on the Porsche driver — a likely scenario I'm sure.

Rear camera integration. A good bit of work involved here with removing the bumper, running wiring to OEM spec and mounting the camera itself. Here's a few pictures of the process.

I heard doing this kind of mod will void the factory warranty. I am from Canada. Would love to do this

I can't speak to the laws in Canada, but in the US we're protected by federal law P.L. 93-637 also known as the "Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act".

I have a few friends that are professional techs in Canada, I'll ask one of them for a solid answer.

Nick, you're not even opening up the PCM correct? Just using NAV-TV harness?

What warranty could possibly be voided?

We are using the Nav-TV piece but not the t-harness. We prefer to solder in the module. Eliminates about 60 possible points of failure.

Regardless, we are not opening up the PCM and nothing will void the warranty. But warranty laws vary by country.

What kind of coin are we talking for just the camera setup and install?

Finished up the project over the weekend and unfortunately ran out of time for a video. Maybe the owner can pop and here and show everyone how the system works. I'll give a brief rundown of how the systems operate.

The rear camera is activated automatically when the car is shifted into reverse, and the park distance radar is displayed in an overlay to the left of the screen. The front and rear cameras can also be force activated by pressing the bottom-right blank buttons in the console — one for front and the other for rear, respectively.

The Blackvue DVR system automatically activates on start-up, and with the Power Magic Pro adapter, the camera can stay on for up to 72 hours after the car is parked. The system connects to a smart phone over WiFi to watch in real time or replay a previous event.

Here's the finished results:
