Question First 911

Hello Guys,

great forum here, gave me much advice on looking for my first 911. Few days before I have found the perfect car for me, only missing the autodimming mirrors (inside/outside). Everything else is just perfect with full leather, Sport Chrono Package, Sport Exhaust, Sporttechno wheels, 14-way-seats, PDK and few other goodies. Car has no previous damage is from a Porsche dealer in germany and will come with 12-months Porsche Approved guarantee.

So I need your advice if the autodimming mirrors are a MUST HAVE or can I skip this when the rest of the car is fine?

I wish that my car didn't have them, as they never seem to turn on when I'd like them to. Manual would be better, in my opinion.

Zetta what does/did your other cars have?

I went from a Audi RS4 (with) to VW R (without) and I missed the feature almost ever time I drove the car. I love that my 911 has auto dimming.

I wonder how hard it would be to retro fit the auto dimming rear view mirror.

Safety wise I wish in traffic I could turn off the side mirrors and just allow the rear view to auto dim alone.

You will drive yourself insane trying to find the perfect build. Passing on dimming mirrors is a no brainer to me.

Audi A7, Porsche Cayenne - in both cars the option is included (outside/inside). Also my previous cars had all auto dimming mirrors. In the BMW E60 I did not have this option and did not miss it, but the car was much more higher than a 911.

There is another 991, which also be suitable and has the autodimming mirrors, but I miss the Sport Chrono Package, the PASM and it also has the 18-way-sportseats with this plastic backcover which I personally do not like.

When you put it into perspective like you did above I would skip the auto dim to keep PASM and Sport Chrono.

That is what I am doing since weeks The thing is, that the first one is a very good deal, has only 20.000 km and the price difference to a new one is more than 40.000 Euro. The other point is, that I would like to have the "old" engine with sport exhaust.

My 911 lacks the autodimming mirrors. Do I notice it? Yes, it is noticeable and I'd much prefer dimming mirrors. Would I have passed on the car just because of that? No. If I were speccing a car, it would be a must have option for me. But if an existing build was really good, it wouldn't be a deal breaker.

My 911 has auto dimming mirrors, as did my Boxster before it. I can't even tell what it does, when I turn it off the mirrors don't look any different to me. Maybe I'm crazy.

You've got the options that count. Don't sweat the small stuff. Mirrors don't make a Porsche fast.

to summarize it:

PASM/Sport Chrono/14-way Sport Seats VS Glas Sunroof/autodimming mirrors/10.000 km less/18-way Sport Seats/Rain sensor

I found that putting options into categories helped, there were performance items (SPASM, SC, MT, etc.), comfort items (14-18 way seats, ventilated seats, etc.), and most importantly bolt on items (PSE, mirrors, spoiler/duck, etc.). Then I looked up the bolt on items and assigned an estimated installed price for each.

This approach drastically reduced a wish list of close to 20 items down to a few must haves, nice to haves, and could be added later. Visiting a dealership and actually viewing/driving/experiencing these things in real life really helps as well.

I would not buy a car without a sunroof, I got glass and derive great joy from it. My S came with PASM and I passed on sports Chrono because I only wanted the motor mounts of the package -- I don't track and could not see driving around at 5,000+ rpm in 2nd gear. I put my car in "sports plus" when I put the PDK in manual mode. 18-ways are nice but once they are set, they're set -- I could pass on them but they came with my "package." I like the auto-dimming and 10K fewer KM would be better.

All just my taste and IMHO.
