Thanks for the heads up! I've been following your UOA thread and I'm interested in giving 5w-50 (or maybe a 5w-50/0w-40 blend) a shot. I'll make sure to stock up.

Lex why do you prefer the 5w50 to the 0w40?

When I get on my laptop this weekend, I'll link 2 important threads for you to read. They were from last year. If you need the short answer and the quick response, it's all about the better high shear stability.

I stopped in today and talked to Lex at work. He filled me in on oil analysis 101. He even gave me the March discount early.

I told my SA I'm brining my own oil in and he said no prob.

I switched to Mobil 1 5w-50 for my '15 991 GTS, '96 993 C2, and even my '91 bmw e30 325i. I had been using Liqui-Moly 5w-40 in the e30. Love the Mobil 1 5w-50. I don't drive the 911s during the winter, so I really do not see the need for a 0w-40 oil. If I recall correctly, the Mobil 1 5w-50 performs better than 0w-40, 5w-40, and even the 15w-50 I previously used in my 993.

BTW, changing the oil and filters (2) is a real PITA in the 993, especially as compared to the 991.

My dealer does not stock Mobil 1 5W-50. Last November Napa had it on sale for $5.99/qt. I bought several cases. Had the oil changed on my new GTS at 5000 miles at the dealer. No problem! As Lex says, 5W-50 is best for water-cooled engines. I used 15W-50 in my air-cooled 1995 993 for 15 years.

Or you can buy 5 quart jugs of mobile 1 for 25 bucks shipped free to your house from Walmart anytime you actually need it. 0 weight as it comes from the Porsche factory.

Here we go again.

You could just use Mobil 1 0W-40, which is the factory fill and is always available at Wal-Mart at a lower price than the Napa 'sales'.
