Hardwiring a battery maintainer
#16
My CTEk has the red adapter end, but I don't have the "smokers kit". Maybe Vic is on to something.
In any case, I'll try the passenger footwell to see if I get a better connection. Thanks for the suggestions. Hard wiring is not my first choice.

for jump starting ..yes ...never connect the Negative jumper directly on the dead battery Negative terminal in case that battery is old and or fuming to minimize sparking an " unpleasant experience " !
for hardwiring a charger ....in Dave's case ...attach each charger lead directly to corresponding battery post

this is when having the center console " smokers kit " is nice ..no leaning in upside down to feel your way to the 12v outlet tucked up high and way forward in the passenger footwell when connecting / disconnecting a charger using its 12 volt plug when so equipped

I'm really not sure why the concern over hard-wiring. It took me about 10 minutes to attach a lead to the battery and a good ground and route it up to the base of the windshield. When I want to hook up the charger I uncover the plug and connect to the charger. No worries about a cigarette plug, crawling under the dash, running the cord out the door/window....
I've got no problem with the 12v outlet approach but this was so easy....

The negative on the charger can be connected to the negative battery terminal, but according to my Deltran instructions, "In the interest of applying an increased measure of safety to this process . . . UL recommends that the second, negative (-) charger output lead connection be made to the grounded equipment chassis rather than directly to the negative battery post."
Who am I to argue with UL?

I prefer the hardwire to the battery as I don't have to have the wire routed out through a door. Access under the hood I believe is easier. I also use a CTEK "indicating" pigtail which tells you the state of charge with 3 LED's. I have used them on my motorcycles and classic cars with great success.

The CTEK 3300 and the Porsche maintainer are labeled the same. There should be no other trivia questions. The Porsche maintainer with the red adapter plug works on two 991s I have had (2013 C2 and 2015 GTS for 3 years) perfectly in the footwell . Without the adapter plug it also works in the cigarette lighter. I used it on my 993 directly hooked to the battery for 18 years. It also worked well there! Hey guys! There is nothing wrong with either location. Let's just change to a more important and meaningful topic please. This is getting very old. I have many more questions that you can answer rather than ask these.

Not exactly either! I had a hard wired maintainer on my 1989 Targa and 1995 993. Late in the life of the 993 I started to use the Porsche maintainer in the 993. It worked perfectly when plugged into the cigarette lighter. I do not have that much insight into the different batteries in the 991 and 993 even though I am a scientist but I can only communicate my experience after using the maintainer for 2 years on the 993 hard wired and 3 years on the two 991s plugged in to the foot wells. I appreciate your input nevertheless.
