Default Dynamic Engine Mounts

Just noticed this when driving today. Started off in standard mode with everything off while the car warmed up. Finally hit the 120F oil temp at a red light so I click the 'sport' button, my usual driving mode. Immediately noticed a smoother engine idle. Clicked it off and definitely some more low amplitude vibrations, back on and smoother again. Same with "sport plus". Does this have to do with the dynamic engine mounts? I thought they were just there but never thought the sport buttons might activate/deactivate them? Any insight from the pros?

I doubt there's a change you can feel from the driver's seat (although I'm sure some will have a strongly differing opinion), and I would also expect them to tighten up resulting in more vibration in Sport mode...

pure conjecture on my behalf, however sport and sport+ *do* effect a number of the cars systems, including PASM, and PADM (even PDCC if you are saddled with that!) its more likely that the idle rpms (or mix) changed, the PADM mounts are not typically active (I believe) at idle/in a straight line... specifically
to avoid transmission of drive train vibration into the car when the mounts
can be "relaxed"

The sport / sport plus is exactly what activates the engine mounts. It's the PUSA website.

I believe the mounts are always active (in the same way PDCC is always on) the sport/sport+ buttons change the parameters of various systems incl PADM.

But... the whole idea of PADM is to dynamically adjust the mounts, very similar to PDCC, so they are present when needed and 'relaxed' when not ... thus
reducing transmission of drivetrain vibration, since the OP mentioned that
he noticed this during idle, I would be surprised if PADM engaged then
anyway ...

either way, changing the mode, changes many variables of the car as you point out ... so differences will make themselves 'known'

p.s
The new V2 DSC from TPC Racing allows control of both PASM and PADM now which is kind of fun!

Probably because the sport plus bumps the rpms by 200.

Good points Larry. I think they they actually tighten up fully (like suspension) in sport/+ to give more direct power transfer and eliminate any sort of driveline "slack". I didn't think or know they went "soft" while in those higher performance modes. IIRC anyway..

Pretty interesting ideas here. Anyone else notice this effect?

they do, but its progressive - when there is no yaw they should not engage

its probably the +200rpm hike in idle rpm that is noticeable...

Note that the OP reported that sport/sport+ demonstrated a smoother engine than "normal", if PADM were active and the drivetrain
was thus tighter you (or at least I) would expect *more* and not *less* engine vibration to be transmitted into the car in that case
(because PADM had connected the drivetrain more to the chassis, thus reducing damping and increasing vibration)

hence its the increased rpm at idle and the resulting increase in flywheel rotation thats smoothing things out... IMO

but I still dont play an automotive engineer even on TV! - only in my fertile imagination...

it also helps if you randomly vary the shield frequencies ... that way the Borg energy weapons are less effective ... and charging the main deflector with an inverse tachyon pulse can be beneficial, but never
exceed warp 9!

Unless you are painting Porsche parts and body panels with rattle cans. Just ask Dr Collie, he'll tell ya how.
