Early 991.1 issues to be aware of?

Great info! Never meant the thread to be a 'X vs Y' comparison... just trying to tap into actual owners/enthusiasts knowledge about these cars. Sounds terrible but I just really don't trust the media and dealer salesmen that much. May be going next weekend to drive a couple (997 and 991) back to back. My previous P cars were a '88 928 S4 (loved it!) that I bought in 1990 and a new '99 996 (Sport Chassis, way too rough and noisy for my taste).

I thought I would miss my manual and worried about my PDK choice. Had the car 2 months, I LOVE the PDK. Manual mode all day. Shifts sound unreal on the gas and ringing the potential out of that engine is another level. Same reason race cars use double clutch trannies -just modern technology for a modern quick revving engine. Now if this were a 993 when automatics sucked.. Manual for sure.
My only compliant is you need to budget 10k for goodies, and the brake dust.. It's crazy how much dust those pads throw off.

Exception: driving all-out in the mountains, giving it everything I can on public roads, I have found the best plan is to put it into Auto (Sport+ of course). Why? Because otherwise I keep bumping the rev limiter, which upsets the car's balance mildly and throws off my concentration. That 9A1 revs FAST and seems to catch me off guard about 20% of the time if I'm trying to milk every last rev out of it on acceleration. But the computer really shines here and runs it to 7800 shift after shift and shift, never banging the limiter or shifting too early and leaving some hp on the table in the next gear.
And for the record, this is the first non-clutched sports car I've had since I traded my 72 Camaro automatic on a 71 240z 4M in 1979 when I was 16. I test drove PDK 991s four times for a total of over two hours before convincing myself to order a PDK rather than a 7M. I was in a Turbo with 6M at the time.
Cheers.

There are a few differences between the early 2012.5 991s and the 2013s. The earlier cars have a limit on the SW rev levels for PCM functionality and map revisions. In a 7MT car with Sport Chrono the earlier cars didn't have rev-matching when in Sport+. There may be a few other small differences that escape me right now so even though the cars "are the same" there were some early "upgrades" from the launch period to the late 2012s and 2013s.

I'm thinking 2012.5 or 13 991 PDK with PASM, Sport Chrono, Premium Package and full leather--would like to find one with 20-30K miles as I will be driving it... a lot. Will not be a garage queen. Have a 15 mile work commute daily and a weekly 250 mile business trip weekly that could be doubling soon to twice a week. Will drive my '13 Ford F150 King Ranch Ecoboost 4x4 crewcab or my wife's '13 Q7 when the weather is bad--the other 340 days per year will drive the Porsche.

There is just not enough difference between the 2 cars for me to justify that kind of difference, so I bought a GT3 instead. About 7 months after I sold the GT3, I got the itch for a sports car again. I picked up a 991S a little over a month ago in practically brand new condition. I can't give a long term report on the 991 because I just got it, but so far so good. The 997.2 had a couple of very minor problems ( power seat motor, noisy wing) in 14,000 miles of driving. Both were quickly taken care of under warranty. I personally like the styling of the 991 better but would not hesitate to buy a 997.2 if a 991 was not in the budget. As far as PDK is concerned my GT3 has what is concerned one of the best and fastest transmissions in the world. I'm sure that the PDK in my 991S is not a fast as the PDK-S in the GT3 but it is not something that I notice while driving. The regular PDK is amazing. The 2 options that I would recommend on whichever car you decide on are: full leather and sport exhaust. Even my wife commented on how good my 991S sounds!

For me, any reason to drive, be it a commute, road trip, or quick errand, is something I look forward to. The car is amazing. My 2012.5 is a base Carrera 7MT, is lightly optioned besides, and it's both very comfortable and very efficient. The crazy good mileage is just a fun little bonus, more to me about design success than anything.
Anyway, good luck with your search. Glad you're here.

I have a Sept 2012 build 2013 model - and it's had most of the TSBs performed on the car - you can find a list on other forums if you search the web
Things like - gas door flap repair, heater malfunction, PCM software upgrade, parking brake software, rear engine cover lining...nothing major that I have found.

Guess you know about the "hot for sale" sticky! Have fun in the search. I was thinking '12 991.1S but found a mint 996tt that I couldn't pass up based on the depreciation curve and torque/mezger.
For a daily you can't go wrong with a 991! Where in Texas? I trained at Lsu-Shreveport.
