I thought so too. I haven't had a chance to look at the manual but I thought that slot was for a SIM card. Installing a SIM card allows the car to have a dedicated phone # different from your personal phone.

Local stereo shop had an integrated solution by NAVTV I believe. Works just like OEM but without the moving lines. Cost was $1300 installed. Don't exactly need it but figured the one time I did bump into something it would pay for itself in repairs cost.
Also of interest they do have a forward camera option for those who scrape their front ends..which I've done more than once since I have sport-PASM. Nice option but I deferred it. But you can see the curb in front of the white 911 and it from the perspective from inside the car also.

Wi-Fi wireless backup camera
Anyone have experience with this wireless product that transmits video to a car mounted iPhone and/or idea on how to best wire the power line connection needed (its only wire) from the camera mount position on the the license plate?

No direct experience with that product, but decades of experience in the industry. Looks like every other cheapo Chinese camera product I've seen.
NavTV, just do it.

I was told/saw elsewhere that the 12.5's had a difference PCM version than the 2013's on and becuase of that the NAV-TV kit required an additional module the later PCMs didn't . The one shop I went to was quoting me in excess of $2,100 as a result of this added module.
Can some one confirm this, and if anyone in the NY Metro area got a 2012.5 done well for considerably less PLEASE give me a referral.

My dealer (LA) said they have a shop (RB Tech in LA) that will install after-market camera for $1,200 and it wont void the warranty of the car. Does this sound correct? I am considering this only if it's true.

This will not void any factory warranty, but make sure you get a guarantee on the labor from the aftermarket shop. If there are any issues caused by the camera installation itself, Porsche will not cover the warranty on the affected component.
Check out the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act for more detailed info.

Interesting... would love to hear their argument. Perhaps there is an assumption on their part that "retrofit" requires opening the PCM box or something? It doesn't have to. Also if done by your dealer service shop there shouldn't be any question as to quality, meeting PAG standards and so on.
Also interesting seeing as how any new car sold in the coming years will be required by federal law to include a backup camera -- or did I misread that somewhere? So why are people so resistant to having these on a 911?

The rule would start phasing in on May 1, 2016 models and be at 100% May 1, 2018.
