Manual GTS Transmission "Clunk"
I'm overdue for posting photos of my new GTS, but I'll do that in a separate thread! Folks with a manual GTS - I've noticed a couple of things with the transmission, and I wonder if it's a synchro issue, or just normal operation:
1. If I'm stopped at a light in neutral with the clutch out, and I push the clutch in and shift to first, I sometimes get a "thunk" sound from the rear. I've learned to take an extra second or so and ease the shifter forward to avoid the thunk. If I'm too quick, it does it almost all the time.
2. I get a similar thunk, or rough feel through the stick if I shift too quickly from 1st to 2nd. Similarly, I've learned to make a more relaxed shift from 1st to 2nd to avoid it. This doesn't happen in any other gear other than 1st to 2nd.
My 997, which didn't have a short shift kit, never did this - so either it's just part of the quick shifting transmission, which has MUCH shorter throws than my 997 did, or it's an issue with the synchros. I'll ask the dealer to have a listen, or try to get my hands on another 991 GTS, but if anyone has real world experience, please share!

Rye - no "thunk" for me in my manual GTS.
And I'm with you about the shorter throws in the 991 than the 997. I installed the factory SSK in my 997 and find that my 991 has shorter throws than that modified box. Hopefully it's not a big deal.

I sometimes hear and feel that thunk...doesn't bother me. It just feels kind of "race car" to me. I find that the 2nd gear is a bit suspect, particularly when the gearbox is cold. One of the early 991 reviews commented that he didn't know how long the 2nd gear synchro would last. I'm not worried about mine, but I do shift carefully when the box is cold.

I have not heard it on mine either. How many miles do you have on the car?

I've got just over 2,000 miles. We had warmer weather this morning (high 50's) and I drove for about an hour and played around with it. If I just slow down the shifts a bit, I don't get it. But if I deliberately make a quicker shift, there's a clunk going into 2nd. It's fairly subtle and damped... not metallic, but just like a thump that you feel through the frame.
I might try to find another manual GTS I can drive. And I've got a service appointment next Tuesday for an early oil change, so I'll take the tech for a spin.

I'd check your transmission/ motor mounts. Something might be loose/ missing?

Thanks for all the replies - the thought that something could be wrong with my new car that I obsessed over from ordering through shipping, makes me a little sick... but I'll trust my dealer to sort it out.
Had to cancel my appt this week due to snow, but I'll try again in early January.

No frequent thunk issues on my end. Happens very rarely and only when the engine is cold.
For me a bigger issue is the fact that 2nd is really sensitive when the car is cold. I've even had the gear jump back to neutral a couple of times, which results in a very unpleasant grinding noise. Since then I'm very careful and determined when I shift from 1st to 2nd before the engine temp is up. I've driven manuals my entire life so I would say that the behavior of the 2nd gear is some kind of engineering flaw.
Once temp up, no issues at all - both when it comes to the thunk and the 2nd gear

Agree 1st to 2nd shift when car cold can be tricky. Also 1st to second gear shift a little rough in my car, not sure why. All other gear changes up and down are rifle bolt solid action.
Sorry OP no "thunk".

Update on this one if you're interested: I asked my dealer to look into it - I demonstrated the "clunk" to the tech, and he heard it. He ended up driving several other cars and his conclusion was that some do it more than others, but he thinks I should just keep driving it and see if things wear in.
I don't disagree - at least I've documented it, and I'll keep driving it to see if things clear up as it wears in. It certainly doesn't feel like anything is seriously wrong - it's just "not quite perfect."
