Default Winter Tires - Michelin vs. Pirelli

I'm purchasing a set of 20" winter tires this week. I've heard that the Michelin Pilot Alpin 4s are better in the snow but the Pirelli Sottozeros are better in the dry (handle better and are quieter). While we do get snow in the midwest, the roads are clear many more days than they are snow-covered.

Thanks for your help.

I don't have firsthand experience with the Pirellis but I've run the PA4s for 2 winters and can tell you that they're good in the snow and in the dry.

I'm the opposite, have only used the Pirellis.

I don't intentionally drive in the snow, but the times I've been caught, no complaints.

Same issue here, picked up my 2016 GTS, 5 lug, car on Saturday.
Some say, get 19" wheels instead of swapping the tires on the wheels.
Any recommendendations for "good" 19" wheels with winter tires.
Will the offset be the same as the 20" wheels, if not, what do I ask for?
Brand suggestions for wheels.

I vote for Michelins.

As far as wheels go, I always say get something simple that won't break the bank for winter. A decent set of BBS is what I would go for.

Timely question. I ordered the PA4s based on my affinity for Michelin products. They arrived in the 20" size and I have to say...not 100% sure about the directional tread pattern as compared to the asymmetric which I ran on a 2014 E63S.

To me, the rear tire's tread looks too busy and almost like it is going to get bogged down with snow. In retrospect, I think I would have gone with the Pirelli Sottozero3 in the stock 20" size (but 255/35/20 for the front). I had an old e46 M3 that I used Dunlop Wintersport M3's for and the tread on the SottoZero 3's very much resembles that.

I think that almost any of these winter tires can be relatively competent on roads where the snow has been ploughed. I am more interested in a tire that can keep me going when we get the 4-8" of snow. I just think the Michelin's look like they are going to get dunked up with snow.

Will see what happens. If it turns out they are good, then great. Otherwise, I'll switch out to the Pirelli's. One of my patient's is a Porsche driving instructor from Germany and he told me that he can get the correct size tires from Nokian and have them custom studded at the factory. I might go for those as I had a good time with Nokian Hakkapelliita 8's on a 335 and X5M.

Love to hear from others.

In snow like that, I prefer my BFG AT T/A KO 2s,...

on my Raptor.

Really? I hated those tires in the snow (and Rain) on my Roush S/C Raptor. I went with Good Years that have been awesome, and look beefier too!!!

I heard from a few sources that the michelins do pack more snow and don't throw snow as well as the pirellis. That seems consistent with the observations above regarding the tread pattern of the michelins.

Default wheels for snow?

20" wheels on the new GTS, which aftermarket wheels, besides BBS?
19" or stay with 20"?

Last year was my 1st winter with it, and I was impressed in the snow.

sorry to be taking this thread off topic....

The oe BFGs are designed for this truck (and H2) to be really hard and give better gas mileage. Id highly recommend going with the GY Wrangler duratrac for your next set!!! they're awesome, and they look a lot better imo.

Back to the real thread, I have the michelins sitting here awaiting the arrival of my new GTS

Same boat--'kept for center locks-- Let me know if you get an answer. I've always gone down "1" size. But have not heard a definitive answer--

I sell about a 60/40 ratio of Michelin to the Pirelli. For mostly dry day driving with a bit more emphasis placed on dry performance I would go with the Pirelli. They seem to report back feeling a bit more like an all-season tire on dry days than the Michelin does. For deeper snow the Michelin is preferred. The Pirelli is a bit cheaper.

You won't go wrong with either.
