Default Driving in NC's Blue Ridge Parkway

I an planning to take an nice leisurely drive this fall. I am thinking of Blue Ridge Parkway. I am from OH and never driven that road before. Any one who tried it and tips on what to do and stay on that part of the country.

No 1st hand info, just what I've been told by a buddy that lives near and rides it frequently on his bike.

Make sure it's a leisurely drive. Cops write lots of tickets there.

Most of the parkway is 35 mph.

The parkway itself is definitely "leisurely" but there are a ton of more spirited roads in that area. Don't plan on "making time" on the parkway as it is the slowest route of travel.

Thanks for the info. I don't consider 35 mph in a Porsche a "Leisurely" drive. I am expecting around 55 to 65 (70 maybe).

I did too ... until I got there and was stuck with s-l-o-w traffic through the mountains. I still enjoyed the vista. It is just so very beautiful! I stayed in Ashville for a few days. Loved it. I enjoyed the mountain roads to Lake Lure much more. The hairpin curves are awesome.

If you don't want to travel as far, there are some nice driving roads in WV. This site lists a few. http://www.motorcycleroads.us/states/wv.html

I'm heading there tonight on a motorcycle. Tail of the Dragon tomorrow morning!

Probably the WORST road you can pick to drive in a Porsche. I have been up and down the BRP many times the whole distance on a motorcycle. Wouldn't do it in a car. Why? The pavement is old and full or repairs, and some potholes. There are RV's up there doddling along at 25 mph and you can't get around them for miles and miles. Parkway police patrol it aggressively. Finally, you will get sick of the tight curves that go left/right/left/right - there are so many twists and turns that after about 2 hours you will say 'I need some straight road'. Speed limit is 35 mph most places and you won't be going more than 40 to 45. Cops and traffic. There are no passing zones for most of the Parkway. Get in a string of leaf-watchers and you will eventually pull over at an overlook just to let them get ahead.

Better roads - almost anywhere in West Virginia. No traffic, blacktop is generally great, big sweepers and scenic views, very little police enforcement once out of the little towns. And the very best roads of all are down near Robbsinsville NC and Deal's Gap. Especially the Cherohala Skyway where you can wick it up pretty good atop the mountains and enforcement is light.

Did it last month in my GTS. Went up Route 80 off BRP toward Mt. Mitchell. I just put it in 3 rd gear and did the curves. On some stretches I could not keep up with the speed limit. Great fun!

Agree. Cherohala Skyway is awesome, don't forget the 360.

Just rode their last weekend (on a motorcycle). It's great fun

Thanks for the info. Most probably will do the WV route instead. It is better since it is nearer from OH. Will start the route planning now.
