Just sort of depends on how badly you want this particular car.

If you want it more than you value $4k, suck it up and get it.

If you want it but not as much has having an extra $4k, then walk away and pickup something on a lot.

Good luck.

Thanks, Parnelli and ipse,

The MRM for Aug was not known in May. Couldn't get it in writing. I think Larry's point that models with bundled options seems like a good clue that they could have looked at when they were giving an estimate. When I asked them, they didn't suggest it would be lower - rather estimated fairly confidently it would be higher.

Ipse - rather than all or none, what about some middle ground? Like drocollie suggested: have an honest conversation and see if they can lessen the lessen the pain a bit?

Thanks for the advice guys!

I'm confused. If they had given you the accurate number from the outset, you'd be in exactly the same place you are now, correct? So the only issue is whether you would have wasted time waiting on this car. Am I right?

If so, what is the issue? Are you saying they owe you a bigger discount now because the numbers turned out lower?

In retrospect, I assume the black edition has a higher base price but a lower MRM (compared to the C2) since it has more options as standard and the options aren't so valued by the resale community. BUT, I, as a notice consumer had no way to know that last May. The dealer has much more PFS experience, including with the prior black edition and other special editions etc. At the time I couldn't have made a more informed estimate, even with more research, so I went with what they told me. It is so far going to cost $4k listening to that advice. Anything I can say to the dealer at this point?

Thanks!
Have you called PFS and asked them to confirm the MRM for your model? I would, just to make sure.

Is the dealer asking you to put the delta in as a down payment to make the lease payments the same? I would respectfully ask that they make the down (ie discount the car further). If not, I think the dealer would understand if you walked.

Sorry for the confusion - difficult to lay it out there succinctly. If I had an inkling that the MRM would be so low, I would have A) dropped some of the less “must-have” options and B) make up for the poor MRM by negotiating a bigger discount (or shopping around for one more). I was ok with the value per $ when I put down the deposit – now that a car has been build, the deal is much worse. I don’t want to just walk away if avoidable – it’s not great for the dealer who used an allocation and worked with me to order it and it’s not great for me since I need a car and it is tailored to what I want.

I’m not sure what the solution is, Archimedes. I don’t think they “owe” me – it was an estimate which I was aware of. I guess I would be a happy customer with some attempt to lessen the hit since it was their sure-sounding info that I relied on. As Dalema said, maybe a bit lower discount, maybe a multi-year pre-paid maintenance? I don’t feel like I was intentionally wronged, but something would be appreciated and seems appropriate.

Dalema – yeah, either someone would have to put down more $ to keep the payments the same as they would have been or the payments will just be higher. In May we didn’t get down to estimating payments, but we did work out all the numbers going into the equation (except the MRM which they estimated for me).
