991.2 bits from automobile
The updated 2016 Porsche 911 will feature a range of turbocharged powerplants that will be more potent, more drivable in performance, and yet also more fuel-efficient than the naturally aspirated engines they replace. In the beginning, we expect two different iterations: a 370-hp, twin-turbo 2.7-liter flat-six for the Carrera and a 420-hp, twin-turbo 3.0-liter variant for the Carrera S. While these output numbers are hardly headline material, both twin-turbo units promise radically beefed-up torque curves as well as significant fuel-economy savings.
While the free breathing, naturally aspirated 4.0-liter motor fitted to the current Porsche 911 GT3 RS has some potential for evolution, it will eventually be superseded by an even brawnier, lightweight Mk II engine, but without forced induction. The lightweight, no-frills Porsche 911R scheduled to appear in limited quantity next year will have a naturally aspirated 450-hp engine, which is further proof that the classic Porsche flat-six has a future in Stuttgart. There is also a lot of life still left in the current 3.8-liter flat-six installed in the 911 Turbo, as the forthcoming, 600-hp Porsche 911 Turbo will demonstrate.

I'd be really interested in how they take the 3.8 MA1 up to 450. The list of upgrades needed to take it from 400 - 430 for the PowerKit are extensive (and cost 17k.) The GT3 version is a wildly different beast and makes, what, 475? But that's different internals almost entirely. Ti con rods, etc. And it gets it by revving.
So it seems like going from 430 to 450, assuming it's still a 3.8, would be a pretty daunting task, given all the tricks that were pulled getting from 400 to 430, and looking at how close the 450 figure is to the GT3's 475.
I wonder if this might be a WAG from MT, not generally the first place I go for my breaking motor news.

While talking with my OPC last week. He mentioned a rumour of 40 "special 991" becoming available next year. When I inquired as to what would make them special his response was that he had no idea. He said they had just been notified that another limited edition 991 would be released.
I spoke to him today about the rumour of a 991R and told him I was very interested in acquiring one.
There is no car yet but there is an "official list" and I am now on it. I should have more information next week.

good question; I think its a safe guess, but a guess, that the .2 will continue to utilize the current PDK (and therefore its manual variant) gearbox, so the
question is, did they design the new engines in concert with the PDK (as they
effectively did with the GT3) and decided for performance and economy to
discontinue the 7MT, or will they continue it (at least for the rumored 'R' model)?

If you have a 991 now, it probably isn't going to get much better.....enjoy your ride. When you see the new beetlized 991.2 with a hair dryer whine on the road you will roll your eyes. The bean counter global warmer crowd FU again.
