Default Day Time Running Light Question

Do the day time running lights only work when you have the light switch to auto? If not, is there a way to turn off the day time running lights...The manual says to switch to the low beam position to turn off day time running lights but if you switched to that position wouldn't your driving lights then be on?

I apologize for giving you info based on the 997 platform as the 991 may be totally different. That said, on the 997 if you use the OBC stalk and go to the menu (as you would do if you were checking your oil), you can turn the DRLs on/off. (I don't have Sports Chrono so I can't say whether or not you can control the DRLs from there.) Also, the older 997s did not have an auto light setting (at least mine doesn't) and the DRLs I think turned off when the headlights were switched on - but I've not looked at my car w/ headlights on to confirm this.

Anyway, sorry for the 997 info for the 991 but maybe the DRL on/off control is similar and this will be of help.

The ability to turn off the DRLs is country-dependent, so for those of us in the U.S. it doesn't appear to be an option.

Get the LEDs and you won't want the DRLs off.

I think DRLs make a lot of safety sense.

I was speaking to the optional LED headlights with the halo DRL.

I don't think you can turn them off in the USA.

Here is what I found in the 991 On Line Manual. The ( ) below indicate a "check box" which could not be displayed in my post.

I also posted a link to the On Line Manual at the bottom of this post.

Setting the daytime running lights
If the "Daytime Run. Lights" function is active ( ), the dimmed headlights will always be switched on when the engine is running. This applies regardless of the light switch setting. The lighting for the instruments and switches is still switched on and off using the light switch regardless of the "Daytime Run. Lights" setting.

The "Daytime Run. Lights" setting can only be changed when the vehicle is stationary or moving at walking speed. The function is only available in countries where daytime running lights are not mandatory.
1.Press the INFO button.
2. Press the OPTIONS button or touch the tab of the same name in the header.
3. Select "Individual memory"
> "Light".
4. Select "Daytime Run. Lights" to activate ( ) or deactivate ( ) the function

That info is from 2012, could that be for the 997 and not the 991?

No, it is not the 997.2 manual.

The 991 was launched in mid 2012 as a 2012.5 as "we" refer to it. Prove it to yourself. Click on the link I posted and then click on the pic of the 911. You get two choices:
  • 2009 - 2011
  • 2012 - *
* (BTW, there is no "end year" listed because the 991.1 is still being produced)

Open the 2009 - 2011 version and look at the and exterior and interior pics, then open the 2012 - look at the and exterior and interior pics. You now have answered your own question.

You can lead a horse to water...

You can lead a horse to water but just went to my car and it does not work like that. When you go to that function it has Exterior Light selection, then the only thing you can chose is how many seconds till the exterior lights go out. Nothing about Day Time running lights. Spent 20 minutes trying to follow your suggestion but I think USA cars are a must have for DTRL
