My new to me 997 w/ 69k miles has a loose something in the sunroof so that when closed and driving over those jarring strips in the road, it makes an unacceptable clunk...three strips three clunks, etc., etc. Going through the service records I see it was a problem in the past as well.
I'm waiting to see if the aftermarket warranty will cover it, in the mean time a wad of brown paper shoved into the rear of the sunroof, between the back edge and the rest of the ceiling, has silenced it completely. I never have had sunroof problems with any of my other past cars, including my 993.
I think we all have to bite the bullet and acknowledge that Porsche build quality is only average. The Japanese are still eating their lunch.

I had the issue of a rattle only when shut. To fix it I used a round piece of self adhesive foam from 3M. Size is about 1inch in diameter and 1/4 inch thick. Attached it to the center of the rear sunroof opening. The cause for the rattle is the interior sunroof trim. The foam piece puts pressure on the trim when the roof is shut and prevents the rattle. The foam is no visible neither in open nor shut position.
