I know a few people have piped in and said this is a great deal - and I think it is - but any car of that age coming off lease would have a similar residual. After all, Porsche sets the residual and it's just based on model, miles per year and term of lease.

I suggested on another forum that people leasing should post when their cars are coming off lease if they don't intend on buying it (which most don't).

Based on current residuals (not sure what they were back in 2012), this deal makes sense. A Cab S with 10K miles for 3 years has a residual of around 55%. $135k x 55% = $74K.

If it were a 2 year lease, so 2 years old vs 3 years old the residual would be around 63%. $135K x 63% = $85K.

I think I'd take the 2 year old car.

The trick is to buy it for the residual from lessee before it goes back to the dealer who will mark it up. A private 'non- friend' seller will also probably ask more $$ after checking current values and pocket the difference after paying off PFS.

Exactly. How the sales tax would work is also confusing. Guess it also depends on the risk the former owner wants to take in being able to sell it for a higher price.

New owner pays the sales tax directly. I did this recently on my leased Acura MDX. I advertised it for a price above the lease buy out at 15 months into the lease. Came to a sale price with the buyer and went to his credit union as he financed it. Got the payoff amount from Acura and he wrote me a check for the added difference and financed the residual. I paid no tax and the title was transferred to him. If you can lease a car for the right price you can exit the lease early and pocket a few $$.

I've been looking to get into a 991 as i sold my last of numerous 911's and quite frankly have gone to buying models 2 and 3 years old as i can usually buy a 10 to 15kmile car and not take the hit from the depreciation as it's not my daily driver. I took the hit on the first one i owned back in the 80's and went to a 2 year old model 964 car after that, that i sold for almost what i had in it about 4 years after buying it. The other thing with the newer used models is often they have had the initial repairs you run into when buying new so it kind of gets that out of the way. That said, it seems like the supply of lower mileage 12's and 13's has picked up the past month or two. I assume leased cars from the beginning of the period all coming to auction and out into the pipeline. There seems to be price pressure putting the S's down into the lower 80's. and base around 70. I guess this is kind of typical once a model gets into it's 4th year. Does anyone like their pdk better than the manual tranny. I can't make a decision.

Provided the vehicle has no issues I'd pull the trigger at that price.

Compare this to this listing (2013 991S, hard loaded, but has much higher mileage) which I'd consider reasonably priced: http://www.offleaseonly.com/used-car...96ds154559.htm

Like others said, if you decide to pass, please DM me - I'm in the market for pretty much exactly this model/spec (I'm local in the Bay Area).

Just for fun, and since I have two months of anticipation until I get the 2012.5 S Cab, I was wondering if there are any other cars (new or used) that might be in the running as possible competition for the Porsche at a price point around ~$74k? This will be a combo daily driver and weekend fun car, and must be able to fit two young kids in the back -- so the GT aspect of the 991 is probably a positive in my situation. We've got a BMW 5-series wagon and MDX for regular family hauling duties...Is there anything even close to the 991 that fits the bill?
