Cliff’s notes version: I had some cars. I bought a 911S. It’s white. I like it a lot. Pics below supplied to me by the dealer.
Hi, first time poster & first time 911 owner. I have had a few cars since college and each has been better than the last. VW Scirocco 16v, BMW 325, VW Corrado, BMW 325IS, BMW M3 (E36), Ford F150 4x4, Honda S2000, Porsche Cayenne S, Audi RS4.
I was sent on assignment to Korea and my wife decided not to have the RS4 sit in the garage for a year. She sold it while I have been away. I had the car for 6yrs and 53k miles and it brought me lots of enjoyment. The M3 and the RS4 were the only cars I have owned for 5yrs or more.
Being in Korea without your family or car in the garage and with time on your hands can be dangerous. As an engineer, I love the research nearly as much as the result. I spent many hours looking at different cars on the web and got it down to the following list, which undoubtedly looks familiar: M4, 911 S, F-type coupe, Cayman GTS. There are lots of information and opinions out there. In the end I decided the 911 S, with the versatility of the rear seats was the one to get. A trip to the Porsche Center in Bundang confirmed my belief that my wife and daughter, who are both small would be fine in the car.
After another two months of digesting every bit of information I could find, I was able to take a family trip home and test drove a representative used car at the local dealer. They had a ‘15 S on the floor in Agate with full Aerokit Cup and all the options I wanted. However, I had set a limit on my purchase which that car greatly exceeded. That Aerokit looked nice though and something I hadn’t considered. So knowing that the car size, power, and handling would work for me I set out to find the right one….while back in Korea.
It came down to two cars, both spec’d almost exactly the same with CPO except one was a new ’14 Sport Design and the other a ’14 Aerokit Cup with 2k miles. The Aerokit car had the advantage of being at a Texas dealer and the previous owner had done front end Xpel. The previous owner I was told was very particular about his cars (no washing at dealer) like me. He was coming out of a Ferrari and now has a GT3 – probably on the GT3 forum. In the end my awesome wife allowed me the budget room I needed and I chose the Aerokit car. A story for another day, but buying a car from Korea is not easy even with power of attorney set up.
The car is being delivered Saturday to my house in Austin from Porsche of Plano. I had the rear badge changed to my liking. I am in Korea for another 3 weeks, but look forward to getting home for Christmas and the first drive in my new car. Thanks for providing a lot of very useful information for my purchase!
(BTW..good experiences with Colin at Plano and Brandon at Beasley)
I'm always surprised just how stylish the modern larger Kia and Hyundai cars in Korea are... Much more-so than the mini cars they import to the UK lol
Oh... And super nice porsche!
Thanks guys. I live in Jeongja-dong, which is a neighborhood in Bundang. I am close to Seoul and a 15 min subway ride from Gangnam (yes - that Gangnam). Just like Psy says in the song - its got style. The Beverly Hills of Korea. Bundang is great to live in with western influences - very metropolitan. You can see almost every type of car in Gangnam. I went for pizza not too long ago and saw a Porsche, Lambo, and Ferrari in one visit. The Maserati dealer is a couple blocks from me. I believe the import taxes changed a while back so there are lots of BMW, Audi, Mercedes around and the higher end cars too. The domestic cars have become very stylish IMO. Yes, there are models here we don't have in the states - some good looking hatchbacks, even a very small amount of pickups. I have been coming here for 18 years, so lots of changes. I have found that the people don't pay too much attention to the goings-on in the North. I have been to the DMZ twice, but my friends and colleagues have never been. Why? Its just life. They don't get let the North or KJU overly influence them. Overall, its been a great opportunity from my company for immersion in a different culture. That being said......I still can't wait to drive my car! Delivery in the rain tomorrow.
