Default First track day in about 9 years...

Planning my first track day in a Porsche. Never feared driving my M3's at HPDE's, but have to admit I'm a little intimidated by the 911... Only because of the higher potential for the rear end to get loose on me. I had one bad track experience in an M3 where I learned that I have a natural instinct to lift when I'm in trouble. My heart controls my foot rather than my brain.

Can you buy track day insurance?

Because I had to replace one of my rear tires, my rears have different tread depths (one has 5k miles and the other has 1k miles). There is a noticeable "wiggle" in the rear under heavy acceleration. Will this be a problem on the track?

Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?

When I took my C4S to the track a few weeks ago I was so surprised how well planted the car was and unless you are not smooth the car gives you so many hints that it's about to break loose. The few times I put the car into a slide was totally of my own doing and so easy to get back under control. I was also super surprised how much abuse the brakes can take before the ABS kicks in.

With the electronics on it is very, very difficult to lose a 991. Before upgrading to a GT3, I tracked my c2s 991 a lot and was amazed at the stability. The c4s Should be even better. Go have fun, start slow and keep it safe.

just started to track my '14 991 7MT
agree with the above comments, I have intermediate experience, and was amazed at how easy the
car was to drive fast on track
it is an incredibly well-planted car and the steering, braking, powertrain all come together on the track
don't be intimidated, enjoy.

i took my 991 to the track for the first time this weekend. i am novice with 2 prior track events in my old AMG. i did buy track insurance as i was at Watkins Glen where there is little margin for error, i used ontrackinsurance. at least two cars were totaled at the event.

the 991 was easy to drive on the track and way more confidence inspiring than the AMG. i have a new found respect for the car, even my instructor (a long time Porsche driver and racer) was impressed, especially with sport plus!

I went from a Cayman S to a 991S and was a bit apprehensive as well since I track my cars. But I have been more than thrilled. This car is really planted! You will have absolutely no issues. Drive it and love it!

So, those two cars combined wouldn't have even covered your deductible?

Back in the day when my track car was worth around $20K, I never worried about insurance. If I ever do decide to track the 991 (the decision is still up in the air) I will be buying insurance. Cars can go off for reasons other than driver error...

Luckily there are companies like Lockton and OnTrackInsurance offering HPDE insurance. There are others but I mention these two because people have made claims against them and have been paid. HPDE insurance is not cheap but is worth the peace of mind.

I pay around $650 for agreed on value of $100k

Are those figures being quoted for track insurance for a year? or per event? Guess I'm naive, but that's another pretty big expense to add.
Some years back I did two track days in my Cayman S at one of the several "country club" type tracks that was opening in Texas and trying to drum up business. The first one was all Caymans, the second one was for the Austin chapter of PCA.
Not knowing any better I just got in and drove. They were pretty regulated days and no cars were crashed although two did spin out and off the track. I can see though how something could happen totally out of your control, and definitely wouldn't want to total my almost daily driver.

No reason to be apprehensive if you take it easy and slowly build up your speed. Remember slow-in, fast out during your first session. Your focus should be on exiting the turns fast. While to be truly fast, you need to be fast on corner entry, mid-corner, and exit, it's always helpful when starting out to focus mostly on corner exit. It can be helpful to also try to get all your braking done in a straight line when getting used to the car.

The insurance is per event. it is very expensive but it was worth it for my piece of mind that let me enjoy the two days at the track. incidents do seem to be rare but cars do get totaled and the recent deer incident at summer point persuaded me !

I'm not sure track insurance is total piece of mind. 10% deductible is a healthy chunk of change. And the premiums are outrageous. What a good business to be in! I bet those insurance execs drive better cars than we do!
