Correct. Works in reverse or in forward drive.

I would have loved some sort of old style console handle that modulated the grab. But oh well.
They could also have found a happy medium by doing what the 968 (and I assume all of the 944s) did, where the handbrake is on the floor to the left of the driver's seat. That was fine. Of course nobody knew it was there, so you still had to worry about valets.

I imagine plenty of drivers complained about the floor-mounted handbrake when it was first introduced, but they had no idea just how stupid things were going to get.

Thanks for the quick answers. That is a great feature; very convenient.

It was certainly fine though - couldn't agree more. As a driver, grabbing the hand brake with the left hand, and then opening the door became a very fluid and efficient movement. With the 991, the action of releasing the parking brake is so out of sync with every other ergonomic idiosyncrasy that the current solution does feel kind of stupid.

I have a PDK and have never once used the parking brake. I also appreciate the hill hold this electronic brake enables as well. It's pretty cool to be in a stop and go traffic jam going up a hill and having the car hold itself on the brakes all the time.

Another reason the 991 was built for the PDK and not the manual.

I wouldn't use mine either, but the damned thing rolls half a block before the parking pawl catches. It literally feels like my father's Oldsmobile.

Do you mean only PDK automatically deactivates the parking brake? I have a MT and it regularly deactivates for me before I get a chance to do it when I'm pulling away. It works great.

Many years ago, I loaned my 914 to a friend who could not figure out how to get the parking parking brake off -- near the floor on the left side of the driver's seat. So he left it on and drove around all day and burned out my clutch and parking brake pads/shoes. An expensive lesson and fix for an 18-year-old boy.

They all do it. PDK / Manual

They do, but on the PDK version you get a huge lurch if you take off without disengaging the e-brake manually.

It's as if they actually paid some of their best engineers to find ways to **** up the parking brake. Go figure.

I discovered this as well on the MT, makes driving away very nice from a traffic light.
