I can see the flat-4s in the Boxster and Cayman, but I can't see a 4 cylinder 911. We all got angry enough when the screwed up the headlights in the 996 - can you imagine the uproar?

It's all about what they do with the motor, purists will always complain (for many the 993 was the last true 911), and some will look at the numbers, ring time, 0-60, etc.. Although the 911 was (is) always the sports car that is greater than the sum of its part, the new market and customer landscape is changing. In the end it is numbers that will dictate the direction - sales numbers.

Perhaps this sets up the 911 Hybrid. The prototype LMP1 car for endurance racing is using a turbocharged 2.0 liter flat 4 in its hybrid system.

I think so too, at least in the beginning.

But the small 991 engine is the the same as the 981 S engine...

If I had to guess, I'd say a flat-6 turbo with smaller displacement (~2.5-3.2liter?) for the 991.2 and the flat 4 for the 981.2.
Interessting the idea about the hybrid with a flat-4 to get some room in the back for what ever electrical stuff. The LMP1 has a V4 but maybe a starting point for marketing

I would hope this may open the door to a redesigned 914 type variant. The 914 was a very "ahead of it's time" package, and was an excellent seller for Porsche. I would love to see a brought up to date design.

I don't think we're ever in danger of seeing a 4 cyl in a 911. Ever.

I do think their will be a 911 hybrid, but it would likely have a 2.7 (or smaller) flat 6. IMO we'll see an all electric (hydrogen, Mr. Fusion, whatever) 911 before we'll EVER see a 4 cyl in it.

I'm 95% sure we'll see a turbo/hybrid electric assist 4 in the Box/Cay platform though.

If they get more than 375hp in a turbo four in a Boxter S, the 911 will have to have at least 450 to stay ahead. Will I mind?

The audi tt is rumored to get 420hp so porsche better get on it.
Maybe future 911s will get the f4 plus an electric boost?
