Default How to reduce tire noise?

IMO, the cool thing about the 991 is its dual personality especially with Sports Exhaust. It can be a refined luxury car one minute, flip a few buttons and it's a raucous monster. I love that.

But when I'm in the mood for luxury, the tire noise seems to overwhelm the sound system. I'd like to quiet down the tire noise. Any suggestions?

Would applying Dynamat type material on the back side of the plastic wheel well liners have any affect? My other cars have treated wheel wells (fuzzy stuff coating the liners which apparently is designed to muffle noise) and the 991 liners are just plain. So I was wondering if this was an easy (and relatively cheap) route to take to make some improvement. I don't want a better sound system and I'm not ripping the car apart. I was just hoping to address the wheel well liners like so many other manufacturers have. Thoughts?

You have to expect a certain amount of tire noise with tires so wide. I think it is worth trying what you suggested.

From a road noise perspective, the 991 is quieter than the 997....and significantly quieter than a 987. I know you have different expectations for your 993....but isn't the 991 quieter while still being a sports car?

I will add one more possibility....you are driving in colder temperatures right now and the tires will probably soften some when it warms up.

^^^All good points. I had Super Sports on my Cayman S and they are the best tire I ever had. And we're amazingly quiet and supple. But with only 300 miles on my 991 it will be a little while before I wear out the Pirellis.

Compared to my 993 the 991 is a Rolls Royce. The Cayman was pretty refined in comparison, too. The 991 is certainly the quietest and most luxurious. Still, I am picky and have lofty expectations for my dream car experience. So if I can make it just a tad better, why not!

I agree with the tire replacement comments. What about playing with tire pressures?

Don't add sound deadening (weight) and effect its current "stock" form.

How is the noise level with the Super Sports once they get 8,000 or so miles? My experience has been that most new tires are much quieter than whatever you replaced, but get much louder as they age and as miles increase.

You may end up with the same problem the I have. At 18 k miles and it appears that the P0s will go another 4 in the rear and never wear out in the front!

That said, they seem to be getting noisier and I am approaching the crossover point between frugality and admitting that I just want the SuperSoprts!

A big help would be reducing tire pressure to the comfort specs. 31/34.

Do some track days, you will wear those pirellis right out. Then you can put on the MPSS.

I have 25,500 miles on the Super Sports on my 997.2. While they are probably a little louder than when new because of getting harder due to multiple heat cycles, they are still relatively quiet compared to the original tires that came with the car (which were replaced at 15K miles).

I have about 3/32 of tread remaining on the rears, which will be replaced on the next month or so with, of course, more Super Sports.

Hope this helps!

25k! That's amazing. I never get 6 months out of tires since I drive to track days (and on the track) in the Midwest and beyond. Last summer in my Cayman S I went through two sets of them!

For track days in the 991 I was hoping to get a second set of 19" wheels and track weekend only Super Sports.

But still, I am looking for ways to reduce tire noise in general besides new rubber.

I'm still curious about the fuzzy wheel well stuff. And haven't dismissed the idea of other sound deadening. I'm not concerned about extra weight. I could just lose a few pounds myself to even things out.
