RC with a new Turbo S on Rennteam answered my question:

"I drove with the driver window cracked open (aprox. 20%) most of the time, up to speeds of 150 kph and I haven't noticed any buffeting noise. Even if the sunroof is open, there doesn't seem to be any buffeting noise. In the past, I usually cracked open the co-passenger window to reduce that noise...."

Sounds promising.

Promising, absolutely. But at the risk of sounding negative, not definitive. The turbo S also has air intakes on the sides and a wider body, all of which do affect airflow around the body and the mirrors may just be one aspect of it ...

Right. But by the time Suncoast gets them, there ought to be more reports from poor folks with plain old skinny 991s.

Then too, there will be Porsche level pricing, so the buffeting may be drowned out by a crying wallet.

Suzy991 test drove the turbo S and did not think there was an issue with buffeting.

I guess we need someone with retrofitted or ordered SD mirrors in non-turbo cars to know for sure.

Yea,

I like the drivers window down on the freeway and noticed that with only that window all the way down the buffeting begins around 65-70. If you hang your elbow or arm out just the right way you can minimize the buffeting. With both down at around 70 mph it's like your ears are being sucked inside and out of your skull.

I looked at that new picture thread from today, the one with the Turbo S on the flatbed somewhere in Europe and the Audi you can't tell what mirrors are on that car folded. Look stock.

That's funny...

+1 on hanging elbows out the window-changes the airflow that's what I hope the sport mirrors do too.

Amen brother.

I like driving with the window or windows down on the freeway at a mellow 70 mph. Something can be done I'm sure. Hell, I can drive my ole' classic 1996 Impala on the freeway at 85 mph with all the windows down with zero buffeting/noise whatsoever and carry on a nice low volume conversation.

You know, sooner or later somebody is going to come up with some cameras to do this side view job and the aero problem will go away. Of course, that will still leave the rear view camera controversy but that's another issue...

I guess 'real' sports cars have have mirrors and buffeting
