Many high end motorhomes in the west are registered in Montana via the LLC
loophole to achieve no sales tax.
However.........
In WA State they are wise to this game. I understand the legal consequences go far beyond the tax you would have owed.

I called an attorney in Mt. A few months ago about doing an LLC on my RV. One of the requirements is my RV must be physically out of my state of residence for at least six months of the year. He was fairly certain that many of his clients did not comply with this requirement of the LLC.

I believe the sales tax in suburban Chicago, at least in Hinsdale where I live, is 7.25%. That is paid if you buy from a dealer, new or used. If you buy used from an individual, the sales tax is capped at $1500. I too am hoping to find a used 991 for sale by an individual. Most I have seen are priced higher than dealerships...

You will get away with not paying tax sometimes regardless of which state you buy in. I happen to live in Az where we have no sales tax on private sales but do have tax when buying from a dealer. I've purchased several cars to be shipped to friends and relatives around the country. Because the cars are being shipped the local dealer does not collect tax and has sent an Arizona title to my relative in their own name for registration in their states. Once you have that title in your name it becomes only a title transfer, not a sale, and you can get away without paying tax.
