Default 997 Owner's Impressions of 991

I've owned 3 997s and a 987 Cayman, and I drove the 991 S this morning (thanks, chuckbdc!).

Chuck has a nicely optioned 2012 S with PDK, sport exhaust, etc. Didn't drive it too long, but enough to make some distinct impressions.

1) Sport exhaust is a MUST - wow it sounded great, esp. on the overrun.

2) The complaints about the electric power steering are hogwash. Sure it doesn't bobble around in your hands, but it's very accurate, feels good, and has a nice weight to it. It'd be nice to try to the re-calculated steering in the GT3.... If it's a software change in regular 911s, it might be worth doing if it's better than the current one.

3) I'm still not a fan of PDK. If you have a commute, disability, etc., then I'm sure it's wonderful. I just suspect I'd enjoy driving my 911 more with a manual trans (I had PDK in my 2009 C4S and manual in my 2006 and 2007 C2S). That said, if an auto is a need, PDK is hard to beat.

4) The stability of the 991 is amazing. I took a U-turn at a clip that would have caused a little slip in my last 997 but it was a non-event in the 991.

I have an S6 coming in, but when that lease is up, I'm pretty sure I'll do a 991 (probably a 4S). I'm really impressed and, lame as it sounds, relieved that Porsche didn't "mess up" with the 991. Thanks again, Chuck - I owe you a drive in the S4 and S6.

A key 991 difference that makes it superior to the 997 is aesthetic appeal. It has far more presence due to its length and rear end sculpture.

Chris, you nailed it. I say that as someone who put 80k miles on a new, fully optioned 997 from Montreal to Miami with lots of time on the Blue Ridge Parkway. She was an awesome car, but the 991S with launch control and PDCC is off-the-chart good.
