Can I Get a 991 for about $70k?
I am bouncing around a bit in my car search. I love the new Cayman S, which I can get for under $70k with a sticker of $75-76k if I wait until they build me the right one. And I may very well do that for delivery next spring.
But I am also strongly considering a newer 911 with the same budget in mind. I have seen a number of 2012s that can be had for $70k, some of which are S models, but all of which are 997.2 models. I do not want to succumb to any more budget creep, but wonder if I can squeeze into a 991 for that money. I know my odds will improve if I can sit on my hands until fall/winter, but what do y'all think? Is it worth it to scour the 'net for a 991? Will I likely be able to find one in that price range? I am more than happy with a 6, er, 7 speed manual, and don't require leather wrapped carbon fiber rear view mirrors. What are the more informed opinions here?

IMHO I think you'd be hard pressed to find a 991s for around $70k in the next year.
The 997's already took their depreciation hit with the arrival of the 991, and even they are holding their own nicely around the $70k mark.
You might get lucky and find a high mileage base 991 with no options, but add tax, tag, title dealer prep etc, you're back into $75k territory.
Surprisingly, the dealers seem to be pretty firm with their pre-owned inventory pricing, but then again you just might get lucky.

FWIW I sold my 991 for under 80 some months back, so by now there may be some - it had 3600 miles and a 20 inch wheels and some other various options that made it really nice. You will find a thread back near the beginning of the year where I am wondering about the car and the vast majority of the respondents are accusing me of being a troll, evil and many other names. I have no idea how quickly it got snapped up.

Well, I did find that thread and have read some of it. Thanks for that hour's worth of entertainment, LOL. It is a shame when diversity of opinion is stomped on. Did you end up with a Cayman S? Are you happy with it?

You will have an extra 3 months to save while your ordererd 991 is being built, and IMHO purchasing brand spanking new is a much better experience than purchasing used expecially at this price point.

I hear ya, but I just can't keep ratcheting up the budget for a car. It just doesn't make sense to me. I need to find a slightly used one without all the superfluous (or, nice but not necessary) options. In IL, sales tax on private transactions tops out at $1,500, versus paying 7.25% if purchased from a dealer. Every little bit helps. We shall see if I can hold out or just throw in the towel and get a new in stock Cayman S. lol

To compound his challenge, very few folks got an absolute base 911 with no options.
@william_b_noble - I was at a dealership where the owner was "offered" $90k for their trade-in and the car was on sale 48 hours later (after the all important dealer prep) for $106k.
Chiboy - let us know how your search goes..

I'm not sure why people are assuming that my $70k budget includes sales tax. Do you also assume it includes insurance? ;-)
In all seriousness, I am comfortable with a $70K car, plus fees/taxes, and don't mind a lightly optioned car. My Cayman S build would probably have 6 speed, full leather interior, Infotainment package, Comfort (heated seats) and sports steering wheel. Good God, man! I am even willing to stick with black seat belts! lol
We'll see whether patience is rewarded, or impulse rules the day.
