Hi All
My car has about 9000 miles now. I guess service is due at 10K miles.
Do you guys take it to the dealers or independent shops? Will going to a independent shop affect the warranty? How much should I expect to pay for dealer service compare to independent shop?
Finally, anyone in Chicago can recommend a good shop?
Thank you all in advance.

I happen to have an excellent relationship with my dealer and get great service from everyone there, so I have all my maintenance and repairs done at the dealership. I have always felt their pricing is reasonable (although I haven't shopped around), and I do value the level of service - they get me in promptly, keep me informed, provide Porsche loaner cars...overall a great value proposition from my perspective. It certainly doesn't hurt that I have bought a number of cars from them and referred several other customers.
This probably doesn't help you all that much, but in my opinion it's important to look at the whole package your vendor provides, not just $ price. Anyway, I hope you are enjoying your car as much as I enjoy mine!

I always get my high-line cars serviced at the dealer. IMHO, they know the cars better, have better trained mechanics and have the financial wherewithal to pay up if they screw up. If an independent screws up and causes your engine to grenade, they may not have the money or insurance to make it right.

Yeah, I agree with you. But I just wish dealers can charge more a reasonable price.
I heard they charge about $400-500 for the 10K miles service which is just oil and filter change. Which independent shops charge about $150-200.

Will the indie do the available software and firmware upgrades?

For better or worse, I think it's best to have all services done by a dealer while the warranty is in effect. If something happened, i.e. engine failure, during that period, it would be an open and shut case if all recommended service had been done by an authorized dealer. Much murkier if you had to prove an independent had done the same things.
I would imagine my dealer charges more than several reputable local indepedents, but during warranty, we're just talking a few services. Assuming I keep the car past warranty, I will likely go independent.
