Default advice on purchasing poc 991

Hi all.

I've started seeing a few pre-owned 991's at my local dealers. Wanted to get your opinions on buying a used 991.

The one I'm looking at is plat silver w full leather, premium package plus, bose, pdk, sport chrono, spasm, classic wheels, sunroof. its a 2012 with 11,000 miles. the car was built in dec 2011 and put into service in feb 2012. Original list was $125k. Seems to be in excellent condition and does carry CPO extended warranty.

A few questions:

Are there any common issues with early-build 991's to look out for? should i be concerned with the fact that the owner traded in this 991 within a year?

What improvements (bug fixes) have been implemented in MY2013 991's.

what kind of discount to original msrp should i be targeting - 15%, 20%, 25%, etc.? seems like i should be able to get first year depreciation at least.... but what's that?

I had been thinking new. but if i can save 25-30k and get pretty much what i want. seems like a reasonable way to go. Thoughts?

Thanks.

I think you can base the price on the residual value in Porsche leases: 24-month leases show 22% depreciation, but that's on a base car, not on one heavily optioned. There's more depreciation on well-optioned cars but your best bet is to look it up at Edmunds.com or KBB.com. What's the dealer asking on the car you're looking at?

i looked at kbb and edmunds. edmunds doesn't show 991's for used cars yet. kbb has pretty thorough coverage. kbb shows 100k for cpo price. 97k for private party. i've always heard porsche's depreciate a great deal >25% during first year (or once they're driven off the lot!) 22% over 24-mos seems like a very conservative rate of depreciation to me.

It is, indeed! Maybe Porsche is offering such residuals so as to move whatever 2013s are left.

The only options with some residual value are leather, PDK, the sunroof. You can write off all the extra options as no value added. You have 2 years depreciation. Anything around the mid 80's is a fair deal for CPO. 100k is somewhat high even for a 1 years worth of depreciation.

I have a 2012 991 and I love it. The fact is that you have to have a reason to buy a used vehicle versus a new car and it is usually money. Timing is a major factor in pricing and winter is much better than summer. Dealers need to close out inventory at the end of the year to get allocation for the next year so you get great deals. CPO programs have become very popular and can dramatically add to the price of a car. Check out the service records on the car through the dealer's computer to see if there were any issues with the car that may be quirky and chronic. Fact is that these cars are extremely well engineered and built so there is no reason to fear owning a used one and the CPO only gives you peace of mind. Compare it to how much a new 2013 base car would be with the 2014s coming out and you might be surprised at what you can get.

I would think it unlikely you are going to find the car you want at the best price at your local dealer. If you are willing to wait a long time or travel to look outside your area you have a better chance.

I think that is an exaggeration. A car with more options will attract more interest thereby creating more demand, which ought to allow for a higher price.

Those on this site are certainly interested in more than leather, PDK, and sunroof.

Early build cars (pre April 2012) had around half a dozen "service campaigns" to correct manufacturing deficiencies (replacing parts, resealing compartments, software updates and the like). Most were to prevent issues that were identifeied early on. I had them ALL done and never had an actual problem- before, during or since.

Any Porsche service department has all the information about them- and about your car- by VIN- in the PCNA database. They should be able to provide printouts of the records to you- and do the campaign services if they were not previoiusly done.

The forum discussed each one in detail when they happenned. A bit of searching should reveal them to you- but really- the dealer should do that and in detail.

Most of the cars listed are the previous model 997, there are a few 991s in the list so you need look carefully.

Noticed that too. Remember, the 991 was a mid-year arrival in 2012, for some time, both models were side by side on lots.

Go to the Porsche web site and search pre-owned cars. In the left panel scroll down and select 991, then select your models etc. That will give you the best idea of what the price range is for 2012 and 2013 cars. Good luck finding an S in the $80's.

Most of these cars are 997's not 991's.
