Default 991 vs 991S with PSE

Both similarly equipped with PSE, do they sound the same? Do the extra 50 ponies affect the sound of the engine/exhaust in any manner?

Thank yall!

no. just as loud. same pops and gurgles.
downright obnoxious in residential neighborhoods.
able to scare large dogs into silence
make every baby in a 5 mile radius wake up and cry
can force a tree to sprout leaves in the dead of winter
will grow hair on my bald head(there, i've gone too far)

I had a long talk today with a client who is a race car driver and mechanic (we were changing the oil in my 991 at a 5000 interval, yes, I changed the oil early, don't bother commenting about this habit) and I hope I'm not starting another S, nonS rant but...here goes: he has driven 991 and 991s cars and told me that unless I was tracking the car I should not notice any difference driving a 991 except for the added weight to my wallet.

It's ok not to spend more money for the S as you can still wake up your entire neighborhood by downshifting a base model into second at 50 mph

Haha, good one...
Both sound fantastic with PSE engaged, but in my ears the Base is more high pitched and the S is throtier. I like the Base sound w/PSE better.
I had a Base 991 and agree that both have similar performance when driven hard, I honestly couldnt tell a noticeable difference, but my butt dyno tells me that the S pulls harder at low to mid revs. Even though its no torque monster, it feels much faster when cruising relaxed arround town.
For that sole reason I am upgrading to the "S".

Unless you drive at illegal speeds on the road

Ah this is all good information. Thank you.

I had also been told by a friend that tracks his 997-S that the extra horsepower is only valuable on the track and is basically unusable in everyday situations. He doesn't have the PSE and didn't know what difference it made in sound.

I LOVE the sound of the PSE on the 991-S but haven't been able to find even a video of it on the base 991.

Apologies for the thread hijack, but I have a question:

Does a car without PSE sound exactly the same as a car with PSE that is turned off at the centre console?

Your friend is right, the difference between 997 vs 997S is minimal.
991 vs 991S is a different story. Imo the 991S is a better daily driver and not a better track car, +400cc and a more "usable" torque curve makes a world of difference to me.

991 with PSE. Headphones recommended.

Stock base no.
I believe that the S does.

In the base 911 (non-S), PSE sounds different than the standard exhaust even when PSE is turned off. I just installed PSE in my 991 C2 and can tell the difference.
I do not know if there is a difference on the S model.

you are absolutely correct, in fact, the base exhaust is completely different from the S non PSE exhaust.

I just drove a Jag Fs and the exhaust is out of this world. The "pops and gurgles" were everywhere, on start-up, downshift, and so on. Just sounded wild. So much so that I'm on rennlist trying to figure out what it'll cost to install PSE in my 991s.
I looked on the Porsche site and found "sounds" but the PSE vs standard on the 991s didn't sound all that different.

There's a good YouTube video of a 991-S with a bunch of comparisons of PSE-on vs PSE-off. It is an awesome video! I just searched on something like "2013 Porsche 911S PSE" and it came right up. The difference is amazing.

Edit: Here it is!
