Do any of you have difficulty "seamlessly" downshifting from 6th to 5th..
I find that it's far too easy to find 7th instead of 5th, or worse yet finding 3rd (if you really under compensate)!!!

I've been driving manuals my entire life, but the springing and spacing across the gate above fourth to seventh is certainly testing, and lacks the sort of accuracy you'd come to expect

Your thoughts / comments aside from the "should have opted for a PDK", are most appreciated..

I have not had that issue, I thought I might when I first learned that the tranny would be 7 gears, but no issues yet.

I haven't experienced any problems yet. I'm still in "learning" mode, though, as the car is not yet a week old.

It just takes getting used to. It doesn't naturally glide to 5th, you have to do it a little more attention to going straight up.

I would have loved to have had an extra button that electronically disengages 7th.
It would work the same as Auto Stop/Start setting, seeing both these features are there to address MPG requirements.

Not another button. A setting in PCM to also lock out 7th when the Auto Start/Stop is deactivated.

The only quirk of my 7MT I have noticed is it needs to warm up to work properly. It's pretty balky and notchy feeling until water and oil temps have reached operating range. After that, it's been generally pretty eager to go into the gear I want it to.

the only issue for me at first was the 7 to 5 shift...now its perfect

Once I learned to essentially ignore 7, it has been seamless.

Well, aside from hill hold, that is. Just got to deal with it on essentially flat ground about 1/2 hour ago. Pretty annoying when you just want to go. Anyone from Porsche out here monitoring forums?

5th-7th gears are a bit tricky, yes. If I'm in 7th and want to downshift directly to 5th, I have frequently ended up in the no-man's land between 3rd and 5th and have to search around. Sometimes I accidentally get 3rd and have to try again. Also, going from 7th to 6th has resulted in several ****s to 4th instead. 7th is so far out there that when you pull back into neutral, it can be tough to find the exact gear you want. I also think I'll get better at it with time...I've had the car about a month now. But if you ignore 7th, the problem doesn't occur. But I like the 7th gear because my daily commute involves about 30 miles of pure highway each way at 70-80 mph, so it's great for mpg.

Does take some practice for sure.

But.. really, how many times are you really needing to use 7th gear? So downshifting from 7th is more or less a non issue.

DC traffic is sooo bad that I very rarely get up to 7th but then again, I would very rarely change it. I have become a rev matching junkie and I know that mpg is an issue but for me I didn't buy this car from mpg. The way I drive I am lucky to get to 20 mpg, thats not to say that I exceed the speed limit. Just love playing with the downshifts.

All that being said, I understand the downshift issue and it doesn't matter how much you repeat there will always be that occasion you fluff it and it irritates.

Initial question was about shifting from 6th to 5th.. not necessarily from 7th.

For the type of driving I do, (mostly around town and short drives) I rarely use 6th gear so downshifting to 5th has not been an issue.
I will make a point of trying it more often so that I might offer an opinion.
