Wink V1 hardwire

Got a ticket (first in 25 years of driving) so decided that I needed to get a V1 in the 991 (have one in every other car and for some reason just got complacent with the 991 and there you go...).

Decided to piggy back from the passenger side fusebox.

Step 1 was to remove the A pillar trim. Very easy with a plastic tool to remove it (pops easily).

Step 2 was to remove the trim going from the bottom of the passenger footwell to the top of the dash. Be careful that the main prong connecting the plastic is at the bottom left - be careful when you remove it. I went too fast and broke it... easy to fix but would have been better to not break in the first place

Then it was time to pass the telephone wire from where I wanted the V1 to be (right of mirror) to the fuse box. Super easy to do with the trim removed but there was a bit too much wire from Valentine so I had to do a few loops at the bottom and at the top - easy to hide under the alcantara roof line and behind the fusebox

I had to think about what fuse to use... Since I don't have a TV tuner in the car I assumed that the fuse controlling that would be a source of switched power but no cigar... Then I tried a few others that I assumed would be switched but again no cigar! Finally, I used the fuse for the passenger weight detection. 5 Amp unit located at position D5 and it worked.

I used the big bolt in the fusebox to ground the V1 - see picture, had to make the opening of the V1 supplied ground a tad bigger but very easy to do without tools - metal is pliable

Last closed everything up and it worked just fine.

40 minutes including 15 to select the fuse and hopefully no more tickets...

I can now say that I installed V1s in my 964, 993, 993 and 991 - never had a 997...

Good grief. I was able to do it without removing any trim. The wire is thin enough to just push up into the roof and down the A-pillar. Just sayin'.

I say this to help the next person. The V1 hardwire is much easier to install than the procedure above.

U need this.

Cooper Bussmann/ATC fuse tap

Or this

Also I'd find another circuit to use other than a safety feature like pass detect.

On the drivers side fuse box position D 1 is ideal. It is switched and is for the rear wiper which few of us have. I hardwired my 9500ix yesterday using limey's post as a guide. Quite simple.

Why not just connect it to power at the rearview mirror? That's how I had my V1 hooked up in my MazdaSpeed3.

Nicely done and thanks
re the comment on connecting to rear view dimming mirror. That is how I had my escort wired in my old 997.1, but there is a reason that won't work on the 991. I forget what the reason is, but that is my recollection
To te original poster, I don't know if you have or use the engine cut off feature. I have been told that affects the valentine when it was piggybacked from the main fuse box. not sure if you will be impacted, just an FYI
cheers and thanks for posting

LotF: re Cooper Bussmann/ATC fuse tap; how do you connect the wiring from the V1 to the red end of the fuse tap? Also, which fuse slot did you end up using?
thanks

While D1 (rear window wiper fuse slot) stays powered during the engine start/stop sequence, the V1 will go through a reboot when the engine restarts probably due to a transient voltage dip. While that does mean you'll hear the V1 start up beeps when you take off from the light, I never found it objectionable. In any case, for different reasons I now switch off the start/stop feature.

As for connecting to the rear view mirror, perhaps that source powers down during the start/stop sequence which means no radar detection while stopped a light, and V1 reboot when you take off..

Valentine 1 sells something called the "Brown-Out Booster" that will keep the V1 from rebooting when the engine starts from the Auto-start-stop function.

It's very very easy to install... just goes in between the hardwire kit and the V1 via telephone cables.

For $25 it's totally worth it.

V1 comes with a direct wire module with a red and black wire. Connect the red wire to the fuse tap by inserting the wire into the blue barrel crimp connector at the end of the fuse tap. Crimp the blue barrel. Easy peasy. The black wire goes to the closest frame screw near the fuse box. Normally there will be a screw with black wires already populated. Just add another black wire to the mix. But, any frame screw will do. Plug phone cable into direct wire module and route to review mirror. Done.

You can order a direct wire module from V1 if it is lost or you bought one secondhand.

You can use any switched circuit. Just don't recommend using safety feature circuits. Rear wiper on drivers side fusebox was mentioned above. Ideally an option you don't have.

Looks like B6, tv tuner, or D6, seat vent motor, in passenger side fuse box would be likely candidates.

Default Messing with Safety systems

I would not use the fuse for passenger weight detection. That is likely used for seat belt warning and passenger air bag. I believe some airbags are variable based on the weight of the passenger it at least will not fire the passenger airbag if the seat is unoccupied. I would not want an airbag malfunction in any way shape or form. Better to tap something not safety related.

Has anyone had any experience with installation (personal or professional) of the Escort Passport 9500 ci in a 991?
