Does software tuning affect engine life?
Hi there,
Obviously I'm not an expert, so thought of asking some who are!
I knew someone who had a Cayman S with tuned with a software, the installer told him that it doesn't affect the engine at all, it just increases gas consumption. Is that true?? Would be interested to know how do these things work!

I have a pretty humble opinion about this and I know it might spark fires around here, but you've asked :
It does put more stress on the engine and it's components.
Let me summarize quickly :
A stock tune made by engineers who built the engine takes into consideration 4 big aspects :
1) Reliability
2) Fuel Consumption
3) Performance
4) Emissions
Most aftermarket tuners goal relates only to no 3) on my list here.
This pretty much sums it up for me...again my humble opinion.

It is also possible that there is more power and capability built into the engine that the builder intends to access via software improvements during the model run. I was a dealer for Volvo Marine diesels. A wide range of power is available from the same engine with only downloads to the computer being the difference. One download cost $12K and gave a 75 hp bump IIRC. Being the beta for a new chip is a scary proposition to me.

But as always, I'm sure there's no free lunch.
