Default Mezger engine in 991 based GT3 Cup

I was surprised to read in the latest Pano that the 991 based GT3 Cup car will be using a 460hp 3.8-litre Mezger engine. They are getting lots of dependable power out of the new 3.8 in both NA and twin turbo applications. Why do you suppose they are sticking with the Mezger engine?

"I know where the photos were taken and I don't know how they did it. We want to participate next year [the next day Manthey were announced as running factory 991 RSRs at Le Mans 2013] and, yes, the RSR and Cup will use the old engine. It is very reliable and strong and it does a good job and in the Cup it will be 3.8 litres. It was an easy decision."

You guys should check out this morning's "New 991 GT3; Exclusive pictures" thread in the 997 GT2/GT3 forum.

Apparently the 991 GT3 will have neither the 9A1 or the Mezger, but instead a brand new dry sump, revs to 9K, Motorsport engine which will be the basis for the next generation Cup car engines. Change has come, and it looks really good.....

I believe they are still using the old engine as it's still homologated (or whatever) for a while longer. Seems the new GT3 may be the test bed for the new engine.
