new Porsche Cayman any day over 911

I don't think Steve Sutcliffe would have any trouble buying a 991 if he felt the need.
Are you really so insecure that you can't imagine someone who would prefer a cayman to a 911?
really?

There was a kid hanging half way out a truck window taking pictures of the 991 as we drove home on the Interstate last night. They kept pulling ahead to try to get a better shot, finally I had to dust 'em for safety

Some of you 911 guys are funny.
The facts are, the cayman is dynamically superior in every way. It's smaller, lighter, mid engine, and would smoke the 911 if it wasn't held back by Porsche. It's really a shame that the car isn't better.
Now if you own a 991, you shouldn't be worried about people in caymans. What you have is an incredible, daily drivable GT. The 911 and cayman don't actually compete with each other because the owners are looking for different things. I would argue most 911 owners are more mature and value the utility the 911 provides.

In that context, those comments were standard issue Boxster/Cayman review rhetoric -- arming the buyer with things they can think as they decide on a car as a rationalization for not buying a 911. It's a bit bass-ackwards, but it's been that way since '97.
I think all the pommy journo's are trying to ease into copying the monkey (when in doubt, drive a bit quick and get the tail out) which misses the point of listening to opinion of the review, rather than it being another drift video.
As many have observed, if only Porsche would put the Carrera engines in the Boxster and stop this absurd model "differentiation" and pecking order, I don't think 911 sales would suffer and I VW/Porsche would benefit. Now that VW is lining Porsche up beside Audi and its other marques, it's all a bit "corporate greed" and not enough "engineers made the car win races, then snaked around the laws to make it road legal."
Porsche is leaving money (my money) on the table by not making a Cayman GT3 and a Cayman Turbo ... by whatever name ... just literally the 911 engine flipped around and stuffed into the ample belly of the Cayman. If they would have continued the logic of the Boxster Spyder (no PASM, no nuttin') this Cayman could be a sensational machine.
It seems to me, in the Ferrari slice of my brain, there's a lot of aging 360 and 430 drivers who (vocally, publicly) lament not having a new Ferrari to buy. The 458 is too expensive and Ferraris are now too quick to depreciate if driven, the California is a bulging boulevard cruiser and neither car has a third pedal.
A Cayman (or Boxster) around 400-450 horse and lighter by hundreds of pounds than a 458 (or 911 ...) and with a manual gearbox ... come on!

Dynamically the Cayman has always been a great car and I'm sure the new one will be no exception, especially out in the track. I have always like the Cayman, but never been an option for me personally since my 991 will be my DD and I will use the rear seats for my 2 year old.
I would love to get one for a weekend car and track car though in a few years.

I have a slightly different take. If you have driven the 981 Boxter S hard, you know this is going to be a terrific Porsche, close to the 991 in more ways that it is different, but with its own character.
But the qualities the Boxter/Cayman used to enjoy, compared to the 997, in stability, balance and turn-in feel are, based on flogging a 981 Boxter S and my 991C2S, a thing of the past. Equally, both the 981 and 991 series have moved up substantially in ride quality and interior ambience and ergonomics. Just look at the Boxter / Cayman forums where the whining over size and comfort (and spurious issues of styling) mirror the 911 sites.
Both are better for daily use, long range cruising and windy road flogging. Contrary to the "price diff makes the 981 a bargain" logic, I find that both have the right value-price ratio. I suspect that tracks the engineering goals as well as the marketing strategy behind these cars.
