My wife told me I'd never own a Ducati - so I bought one - she then told me to stop looking at 911's on line as I'd never buy one - so I bought one!!
So in a nut shell - spite!!!
At least that's how I tell the story!!

I have been a 911 fan since i've known about cars, may be 3-4yrs old back in late seventies. After over 30 years and having 11 and 8 yrs olds, I would've never thought of buying a 911, was in fact looking at Panamera gts. My wife assumed all along that pana being such a "huge" car could at least seat 5. After test driving, she completely discounted pana idea and suggested why don't I look at "smaller" one with same "4 seat" space and that can fit in our covered garage perfectly
...without wasting a second, I test drove 991S And placed my 4S order that day...

On an early Saturday morning my wife sent me out with an assignment to buy her a new Acura SUV. I was in the Acura lot checking out the new MDX with a salesman babbling away. Hendrick Porsche opened their store by pulling out some new 911's with sport exhaust early that morning. Once I heard that sound, it was over.... I walked next door and purchased a new 911. Funny thing..... my wife has never sent me car shopping alone again.

Great stories!
I always loved the 911 as kid (they were my favorite Matchbox cars). When I was about 10, my dad told me to start saving for a car because he was not going to buy me one. I wasn't sure if he was serious, but I knew I really liked cars - so I got my first job at 12 working in the fields of a strawberry farm for $4/hour. By summer's end, I had banked around $2k - not too shabby! My dad recommended that I invest the money and set me up with his broker who said "invest in what you know!" For about six years, I put all my summer earnings into Disney stock.... Well, that turned out to be a lucky investment as the stock tripled over that timeframe. By 18, my bank account had around $25k in it.
Mind you, my dad did give me a car at 16. It was a "woody" Dodge Caravan and turned out to be very reliable - but was not exactly a chick magnet... So I decided to set my sights on a 911. My dad was not happy about it, but did allow me to make my own decision. At 19, I purchased my first 911 - a 1979 SC Targa. I had been told by a Porsche expert to spent 50% of the money on the car, and hold 50% in reserves for maintenance or mods. I took that advice, and he was right.... Car needed a valve job, new clutch, new sound system (wink) and some other "must have" mods...
Best purchase of my life, and I am still completely addicted to Porsches....

Drove past Porsche dealer every day on the way to school. after graduation and a job, I purchased a new 1973 914, and I was hooked. Moved up to a used 1975 911, then a new 1980 911sc, then a new 1985 Carrera which I still own and don't think I will ever part with--it is that satisfying. I have added a 2011 997 c2 to the line and I reflect back and realize just how lucky I have been, thanks to that 914, to have 30 years and counting of real pleasure every time I approach, drive and walk away from my Porsche.
