XM radio reception
The XM reception in my 991 C2S is crap. It will drop the signal in clear open sky for no apparent reason. I have three other cars with satellite radio, VW, Honda and Benz, that all work fine. Any idea on what the problem could be?

I agree - most marginal reception of any satellite radio equipped car I've had. Probably locating the antenna below the rear window is not optimal, but I'd rather have it there than on the roof!

The main problem is that the XM satellites are located near the Equator rather than further North where the Sirius satellites are. The "view" to the XM satellites is not great.
There is an upgrade to the 997 Satellite radios (probably for the 991 also) that converts them to Sirius. In Canada this upgrade costs about $500.
I know of one case in Canada the buyer of a 997 TT S was able to get Porsche Cars Canada to reimburse him for the $500. On my 991 that's on order the dealer is assuring me (yeah, right) that XM works better now as there are repeaters. I flat out don't believe him.

Interesting my 2009 C4S has XM. My 2012 Audi has Sirius. XM coverage is excellent whereas Sirius has frequent and annoying drop-outs. May be a geographical thing. Montreal must have a ground based repeater since it works in my garage! Sirius - not so much

I get short service drops with Sirius in my BMW and also my 996 TT that has Sirius aftermarket radio/nav system. Both have cutouts from time to time in downtown areas and also heavily wooded areas. Not serious though, only for 2 to 3 seconds though. I also get drops when in the mountains and the road is close to the side of the mountain (on the South side). Again only for a few seconds though. Interestingly, on the same highway heading in the other direction I get fewer drops!

From my understanding Sirius has less repeaters making reception weak ..in comparison to XM. We have a large amount of customers here in the states specifically mid atlantic region that complian about Sirius, I always recommend XM at least in my region.

I have two cars with Sirius and my 991 and a Cayenne with XM. The XM is spotty compared to the Sirius, it does sometimes will just pause or silence. I feel that Porsche XM is a bit worse than others since I traded a MDX in for the Cayenne, and the MDX with XM actually had the most consistant service of all of my cars.
Now the good news is that the Cayenne is the most fun to drive SUV I coud find, and the 991, well, as we know, it doesn't really need a radio, it is too fun to drive on its own.

The XM reception in my 991 C2S is crap too. The signal regularly drops for no apparent reason. As a result I almost never use it and won't be renewing my subscription.

I re-freshed my signal from XM and it seemed to improve reception. I'll have to see if the improvement is real or as a result of the area where I drove this morning having better service.

I live in PA and have frequent drop out with XM in my 991. I have Sirius factory installed in my Volvo and it drops occasionally but not nearly as often as the 991. I have 2 other Sirius subscriptions with after market installs and they hardly ever drop. I brought it back for service and complained about the reception but they said it operated fine and there were no issues that they could resolve with it.

I just the XM antenna replaced in my 991C2S per a Porsche service bulletin and the XM reception is now great. The new antenna came in primer so the dealer's body shop painted it to match. If you have poor XM reception in your 991, I would check with your dealer to see if the antenna is the problem.

had dealer not even registar me for 3 month trial, XM is a complete waste. it would be nice though if Porsche/Harmon could get their act together on the aHa mobile app.
