There is absolutely nothing illegal about a dealership group adding "mandatory" services or features" to your car in the US. Your choice as a consumer is to take your business elsewhere.

It doesn't sound right that a dealer can force you to pay for services you don't want, but you're right it may be technically legal. However, in this case there is another angle, that they seem to enjoy a monopoly in their market and as such using that monopoly in a negative way can raise anti-trust concerns. That would be an even bigger legal problem for them if they get challenged. I am still optimistic that a lawyer or firm worth their salt can put them straight.

On the positive side at least you can negotiate a discount off msrp with them. In my market in Dubai, they don't force any dealer add ons, but you pretty much have to pay msrp for any porsche.

Did you not get a copy of the full contract/deal when you signed? At my dealer those types of items are listed on the contract. Also, deposit non refundable. If they're on the contract and you and the dealer both signed the contract then you're probably out of luck. A deal is a deal.

I did pick up the car and I did pay the extra fees. The percent off MSRP on our agreement still worked out to be better than any dealer in the area. I had checked in Houston, Austin, Dallas and San Antonio. No one else in my area would agree to order me a 2013 cheaper. Seems like Texas dealerships are getting closer to MSRP than other states. Other than the extra fees, I'm happy with the service I received and excited about my new purchase.

Don't let it spoil your fun. It's not enough money to be worth that.

I agree, it's not enough money to spoil the purchase.

It is, however, the principle of the thing that would **** me off.

That is what is great about being rural. I have my choice of any dealer, as they are all at least 100 miles away. I recently, in trading my 2012 CTT for my 2013 Panny GTS, tried to do business with the same dealer I bought my two previous CTTs from. They were trying to charge me 6.9% APR, with excellent credit, when I knew that the APR I should have had was 2.5%. I was ready to wire the money, but balked. Bought from Geoff at Isringhausen instead. Got a better discount, better service and the right APR.

The principle of how you would treat someone else, and how you, in turn, expect to be treated is what would be important to me. Doesn't mean, in your case, that I would walk. Just be, likely, really pissed.

Congrats! Post some pics!

J
