Default 1st oil change

Hi guys,

Was curious when people are planning to do their first oil change. Here in Canada they suggest 15,000 Kms. Seems too long for me. I was thinking betwee 3000-4000kms.

Any thoughts out there?

I will do what I've always done: first oil change at 2k mi. Just so happens that I put 2k mi on the 991following Z delivery. It'll be redelivered in CA by the end of Aug when I'll put it on the lift and change the oil and filter myself.

+1 Did exactly the same when my TD Carrera S came back to the States. I think it's a good idea to change at the end of the break-in period.

Call me old-fashioned:
- 1st oil change after break-in (2k miles); then
- every 10k miles or after 12 months.

Totally agree. Oil is so good today draining it too early is just wasteful IMO.

In fact I look at it bit differently. I want all those nice micro metal molecules burnishing in all those parts to a slick, mirror like finish.

Some time back Porsche had a problem with 928 GTS engines when for the new 5.4L engine they changed piston, ring and block hone. People were then following the growing craze of 3k oil changes drummed up by the oil and filter manufactures. A good amount of these engines had serious oil consumption down the road, to the tune of 1qt every 500 miles! After much research and many 928 GTS engine replacements Porsche narrowed it down to rings and cylinders not seating properly. Simply put, customers were dumping factory break-in oil much too quickly at 2 & 3k miles,...not Porsche's recommendation.

Customers that simply followed factory maintenance schedules were much better off and didn't have the problem.

There is no special factory break in oil used by Porsche It's just mobil 1 0-40. Once upon a time manufacturers used single viscosity break in oil. It's still used for low tolerance engines such as for a rebuild in my MGB.

Just mobil 1 nothing sexy, special or secret. If you wanted you could change it every day to no ill affect except to your wallet.

Had oil change today- at 5k miles. Was bringing car in anyway to have door panels removed and fasteners checked and tightened. I now have no more occasional slight rattle on rough road. While there the techs did a "campaign" tuneup of the PDK software (cannot feel anything different).

The surprise- car goes back for another "campaign" next week- to replace door and trunk and other" body seals"! Have had no leaks. It is an early build (Jan 2012); I don't have any details on the campaign call backs.

Rocket_boy thank you for your insight to the issues and others as well. I have a great relationship with both the mechanic at Porsche a friend of mine and the service rep both helpful and knowledgeable guys. Both are suggesting wait the recommended interval 1 year or 15,000kms for the reasons you suggested. The service rep suggested that the oil is so slick these days that it is recommended you do not toss it out to early to allow for proper break in. The particles in the early part of break in are helpful for the process and should be changed according to the manufacturer suggested schedule. So I have decided to do my first oil change in April of next year (1 year anniversary of deliver) and it should have about 7k on it at that time. I trust them both unequivocally.

LOL and I was about to write that you can't hurt anything by changing the oil more frequently than recommended by the factory. Notwithstanding the good info above regarding oil change interval, I could never understand why anyone would change oil more frequently than recommended by the factory.

Porsche Engineering is in a far better position to determine the oil change interval for Porsches than Jiffy Lube or one of their competitors. Moreover, I don't believe that Porsche would lose any sales if they cut their oil change interval in half, so the most logical explanation is that the oil change interval proposed by Porsche is what they truly believe is the appropriate interval consistent with engine longevity.

Getting my first one next Friday, I hit 6,000 miles yesterday. As the dealer and head mechanic said... If it were my $100k+, I'd get the first one at 5,000 then go every 10,000.
