2013 911 (base) or 2012 911 GTS?
I have spec'd a 991 911, and will be putting in an order shortly.
But there is a 2012 GTS that is almost identical price-wise (out-the-door) that's sitting on the lot and which I can drive off in today (or realistically, this weekend).
Which would you choose?

Depends, how are you going to use your car. 991 C2 would be more refined and comfortable as a daily driver while 997 GTS definitely provides more thrills. I would go for GTS with no thinking. It is quicker, more characterful and still competent daily driver. And older 911 never looks inferior to some newer one. So why are you even thinking?

It's not that simple nor is the GTS that much faster than a Base 991. Trust me - raced them on a track. I think in PDK Sport Plus, the difference is 0.1 seconds. 991 will handle better given its superior design (lower stance, wider wheel base and engine placement etc.) And as far as looks, very subjective. GTS is awesome looking but the 991 is more with the times even though no Porsche looks dated. GTS is definitely more raw.

BTW, I haven't test driven them back to back but I have an impression that 991 C2 feels as fast as 997 GTS when you rev it quite hard while 997 GTS has more mid-range ability.

You didn't state whether coupe or cab. The 991 cab is much quieter than the 997 cab. I would choose the 991 in the case of the cab. I haven't lived with either in coupe form but I bet there are folks here that have. No matter what you pick, you're going to end up with a terrific car.

I guess I am somewhat biased since I own a GTS, but there is no way I would choose a base 991 over a GTS. I would have to think a little longer about a 991S vs a GTS.

I have a GTS Cab, and while I haven't driven a 991 yet, there is no way I'd categorize the GTS as raw. I find it very civilized, very planted, very refined. In fact, I fiind the PSE to be a joke unfortunately.

I agree, that with a 991 C2S it would be a tougher choice. But damn, that GTS was awesome!

Are you going for a DD or weekend toy/garage queen? How long are you planning to keep the car?
The 991 is no doubt more refined and comfortable for DD duty. standard 5 lugs wheel are also much more practical and easier to change out in case of emergency. Since it's the latest and newest 911, it's more likely to impress friends and business associates, a bit more room everywhere with a more upscale interior add to that too. Maybe it's just me, I look at the base 911 like a sportier bmw 6 coupe or a more expensive audi a5. If you can only have one car, then I think a base 991 make sense.
For a weekend toy, the GTS fits the theme better, std sports exhaust, CL wheels, alcantara interior, sports chrono, wide body. Since the GTS is sort of like a final edition carrera. Porsche pretty much throws all the sporty options from the parts bin onto the GTS at a good discount. On top of that, dealers are closing out the GTS at 15k to 20k discount. Almost like a fire sale.
In the long run (after Porsche releases the .2 991), GTS should holds a better resale value as enthusiasts/used car buyers will remember it as the final edition 997 with all the bells and whistles, whereas, the base 991 will be the basic first generation 991. A fine car but nothing special to it.

Personally i would go for 2013 911/991, new design of taillights, headlights, longer wheelbase, tech improvements, better fuel economy... just simply fantastic!
Buying a 2012 GTS no one would recognize that is a 2012, when i was test driving the 991 in the city everyone was turning heads to see the "new 991"

doubt you can steal a GTS when it is such a respected car.
