Porsche offered velour interiors for several years as an alternative to vinyl or leather interiors.
In Europe, leather interiors are not as favored because of winter--imagine getting into a nice cold leather interior in the dead of winter. Seat heaters have fixed that problem for the modern cars. The houndstooth material is available for a price. I attempted to get suede for mine but their new 'suede' is alcantera.

I saw a 997 with houndstooth cloth inserts at the Ring a few years ago. It was among a bunch of Exclusive cars, probably just to show what the department could do. Certainly it's a possibility.
