Default The Narrow vs Wide-Body Choice

There seems to be quite a lot of talk about the forthcoming wide-body 991.

Some wish Porsche would make a 'Turbo-look" 991 C2, some are willing to wait for a wider variant, and some even seem willing to get a Something-4 just to get the widebody, even if not otherwise interested in AWD, really.

Call me crazy, but coming from a wide-body Targa 4, I am actually excited to get a narrow body C2S 991.

On a "standard" street car, I thought the rear of my Targa looked a bit disproportionate at times. That, and the much wider rear track sometimes caused some rim-nervousness when parking or whatever. Plus the 305 wide tires really looked super wide -- like dragracer wide, IMO, and not all that sporting. 295s will suffice for me.

Don't get me wrong, I get the many special versions that have had wider rears, I really do. But I also feel that unless decked out with a fixed wing and some of the other attributes that have been coupled with special models from (I think) the '73 Carrera RS and on, the wide rear on an otherwise base body can look a bit out of place.

Obviously, there is no right or wrong answer here. And I am sure I will be in the minority, but I think the narrower rear on many "standard" cars looks better. In my mind, they stay truer to the original design and -- to borrow the words of Configur8tor in a different thread -- "nothing will replace the purity of the original design, imo."

Thoughts?

For reference (as if y'all would need it, ha!) -- my (sold) 997 Targa 4 and a 991 C2S I drove the other day. Of course, a 997 to wide 997, or 991 to wide 991, would be a better comparison.

I just saw the car last week and the rear looks fantastic. How much width do the wider cars bring? What does the additional width do? I would only get it if it adds performance. Sorry for more questions than answers. Cheers.

I don't think it matters for anything after the 996 era. That's when (pre 997) narrow bodies were narrow bodies and you could really tell the diff.

According to the Porsche configurator the 991 base, S, and 4 models have the same width. The specs could change though...

Yeah, the 997 "narrow" wasn't very narrow and the 997 "wide" wasn't very wide. Visually the difference was not very distinct. I owned both a 997 narrow and a 997 wide. Without two cars being side by side, I have a tough time telling which is which. It's not like it was on the older cars.

It remains to be seen how it is for the 991, but judging by the launch cars we've seen so far I'd bet it plays out the same way.
