Default I am cancelling my 991 order, thinking Panamera.

Hey guys, I made a deposit for a February build 991 a couple of weeks ago, just a Base Carrera, PDK, and a few comfort options, .
I am in my mid 40's and Ive always loved the 911, but could'nt afford to own one until now.
Last friday, I had the chance to drive a 911 for the weekend and for the first time ever, it was a loaner 997 C4S PDK. No offense to 997 owners but my still dream car was not my dream drive, The suspension was jarring, squeaks and rattles, lots of noise from drive train and tires, I returned the car today and I was exhausted, honestly I hated the experience.
I am not a speed freak or track guy so I guess I not the market target for the 991.
I am debating with the idea of cancelling my order and buying a Panamera instead, even though I like the 991 1000x better.

A 997 is a sports car. What you call jarring, others call road-feeling, car-control feedback. I like red, you like yellow.

The 991 is a softer car, but the Panamera is softer still. The Panamera is a great car. Get the air suspension!

The 991 is designed with buyers like you in mind. It is said to be much quieter and more relaxing while offering outstanding sports performance when required. But don't take my word for it. You'll be able to test drive one in a couple of months so hold your horses, wait for a test drive, then choose.

Either you want a sports car or a sedan. If you prefer sedans a panamera should be very comfortable driving wise (though has unpopular shape). Perhaps go for the new panamera gts, should be a more sportier sedan.

Wait till February, take a 991 for a test drive, and then decide. What's the rush.

In sync with that. I often wonder why folks rush forward with such a significant purchase (at least to me) without even seeing / touching / sitting in / driving it.... You are all braver than I

Best,

Matt

You'll regret the Panamera. The 991 takes care of the 997 shortcomings so get that.

Hey I'll answer that! I was just about to buy my first 911 when they stopped taking orders on them and the 991 was coming out. I decided I did not want the last of the old generation, but I'd rather spend a year or two having the novel, interesting, and forward-looking new one. I also love many of the changes and enhancements that I am seeing. My deposit got me in line, with plenty of time to read reviews, which now have me more than satisfied with my trust placed in Porsche.

As was mentioned in another thread, it really was more about the timing than some strange compulsion to buy a car I have not driven.

Now give me my damn car. 3 more months?

Wink

Give it another test with the 991. You had a loaner which was probably not the nicest 997 you could have driven. I drive a 996 GT3 every day and I'm 60 years old. Nothing against the Panamera. It is a great car, but don't reject the 991 so fast.

The 991 is likely more what you're looking for than 997. That said, you might not be happy with the Panamera either...it's not particularly soft and there were plenty of rattles in the Turbo S I drove last week...

I had the same experience with my 997S although I owned it for three years. Mine had so many rattles and squeaks that I finally just gave up and lived with them. It also sucked at the track so it wasn't a purpose built thing, my wife's Miata cornered better and didn't have any of the un-weighting or understeer characteristics of the 997. Out of my 12 Porsches it was the only one that made me feel ripped off so I'm certainly willing to try again, but I won't be shelling out $135,000 for a new one.

+ 1 for that. Wait for the 991. The performance and luxury features I guarantee will blow you away. Panamera is a great performance sedan especially with the air suspension but it won't be a 991.
