I had read the same thing re: PDCC and PDK somewhere too, took a while to find - "The new time was set with a PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission and the new active Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control hydraulically activated anti-roll bar system." Still can't find whether or not it was equipped with sport PASM, but it would seem logical that Porsche would use a 991 S with sport PASM in order to get the best time possible, especially since it had the PDK and PDCC.

Porsche 911 vehicle line director August Achleitner said the new 911 Carrera S, armed with a 20mm lower sports suspension and regular tyres, was now as fast around the famed circuit as the previous generation’s race-ready 911 GT3.

Thanks jrt600 for the link. I don't come here so often so didnt realise that a link was requested.
@DrJay, yes, it has PASM. But not the regular PASM, but sport PASM (-20mm chassis) which is an option on 911s for a long time (well the -20mm chassis is, but obviously it didn't used to be PASM based up until 997).
To be precise, with all the goodies, the C2S does it in 7:37. A standard C2S does it in 7:50. Don't ask me for link as I don't have it.

Put the same tires in the 991S, add wing and splitter, and my guess is that a 7:33 is possible, that's 997.2 GT3 RS territory.
Decrease weight, add power, track tuned suspension, and it will be fairly easy for the next 991 GT3 RS to beat the 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0 7:27 lap time.

991 S did 7:40 on street tires, 997.2 GT3 did 7:40 with a trick wing, deep front spoiler, wider tires and a sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup compound.

The thing is GT-R is STILL faster than ALL of these cars, it does it with a lot of electronics and gizmos that's now added to 991... but no one really wants to buy/enjoy a GT-R... I think the same goes for 991.

August Achleitner, Manager of the 911 model line, delivers a fascinating insight into the development of the latest 911
At the 2:32 mark he talks about the 7:40 time.
"Four seconds of these 13 seconds are coming from the PDCC system.."

Impressive, yes.. that a 991S w/SPASM, PDCC, PDK, w/SC Plus, (DEM equipped of course) can, and very likely will run the Ring at or about the same time as a .2 GT3 ~ maybe even 3 seconds faster, we'll see. However, it will actually cost more than a comparably priced .2 GT3 did and won't be up to the repeated track duty a GT3 is capable of. The GT3 will easily out run a 991S in any straight line run, and, imo, sound better and be more fun. Impressive nonetheless.

Oh my goodness!! After reading all of this and knowing that the new 991 is as fast as my 997.2 GT3 (around the Ring) I just sat down and cried my eyes out. I got in my car, drove it along my favorite route, came home and put the car up for sale! I am totally lost as to what to do.
OK, OK, all kidding aside.....I am really pleased that the new 911 is so "improved". I want cars to get better. But, knowing that the new car is as fast around the Ring as my car has NOTHING to do with how much fun my car still is. At least to me. I had the good luck to drive around the Ring on a visit to Germany back in 1995. I can tell you I had a blast going around that place and that was in a rented BMW 518i. That thing was slow but still a blast. I can only imagine if I would have been driving around in a 911 of any year or model.
I say that it is fantastic that the new car is as fast or faster than my car. It doesn't make my car ANY less fun to drive. Or any of the other cars we are all so lucky to own out there in Porsche land. : )

On a side note. I believe (fairly certain) Porsche equipped the 997.2S with Cups AND PCCBs in order to achieve the 7:50. There is no reason to believe that they wouldn't do the same with the 991 in order to achieve the 7:40. Yeah impressive and may turn an equal lap, but, it AIN'T no GT3.
