Mine is an 05 C2S 6 speed with just over 17K on the clock. This is what I figure to be the price difference with a nicely optioned new one including taxes and fees. The line starts here to beat me over the head. Am I nuts?

Depends on how you look at it.
If you look at almost any standard production car, be it a Benz, BMW, Audi or other, the trade in value of a 7-8 year old car won't make much of a dent relative to the new car's price. So from that viewpoint, paying an added $80K to get into a new 991 is about right. Such is life.
OTOH, if you still think of your '05 C2S in terms of its original MSRP value and if it still gives you almost as much of what you'd want out of a 991, then the added $80K may seem like nuts.
One more viewpoint, all Porsches can be viewed to be overpriced or nuts when you think about the price. Part of buying a Porsche is emotional. Compared to Ferrari, one can say it's a bargain. Compare it to a Vette, Nissan GT-R or even a 370Z, and one wonders about whether they are truly worth the price of admission. For almost all on this forum, the answer is of course "yes"!

Mspeedster is absolutely right in his assessment.
I think you're nuts only if you don't have the money, or it would greatly alter your family economics to get the money.

I would not say you are nuts. Your car sounds like it would be a good pre-owned car for someone. And as Mspeedster has mentioned for a car that is 7 yrs old if you depreciate it over these years it is probably close. You might be able to lessen the price delta by selling it your self etc.
Life is too short and as many have said buying a Porsche specially a 911 is not always based on logic but rather by passion. So no I don't think you are nuts. Live life to the fullest you can.
Cheers,

Why not? You probably paid between 80k and 90k for your '05, had 50k worth of fun with it, and now you'll fork over the same amount of money (net of your trade) for a faster, more powerful, more technologically advanced car. Makes complete sense to me. The only thing you did wrong was not put enough miles on your '05. More miles = more fun per dollar.

For sure sell it yourself, no dealer is going to give you what you can get out of it by selling it yourself. Also, you are lucky because you have a Porsche in the first place. Which means percentage wise from the Original MSRP or purchase price the car has not depreciated nearly as much as other car brands. Not even Ferraris and Lamborghinis hold their value, as a percentage or original price, like good ole Porsche.

Keep your car. Its only got 17K miles in 7 years.. Or 2.5K per year. Think of it this way, you probably spent $90K or so and didnt drive very much. So not worth upgrading to not drive. I'd drive it a lot and not worry about depr. To spend over $100k to absorb further depreciation for not much driving, not for me.
Better option would be to get an 09 C2S. For your car and $30-35K. That way, you have 95% of a GTS/991 for $45-50K less.

I think my car stickered for about 86 or a little less. Probably worth about 45-47K if I sold it now...

80k makes no sense to me. I just picked up an 05 C2S for 45k with 24k on the clock and an easy 9/10. I could not imagine doing what your contemplating with the mileage you have. you have saved much of your car for the next guy. Been there, done that , never again. Im driving my ZR1 and Porsche into the ground.
