997.2 991 comparo (side-by-side scaled images)
These images are scaled such that the 991 appears to be exactly 4 inches longer in length than the 997. In this image, the wheelbase (measured between front and rear axles) then comes out 3 inches longer, indicating that the scaling is correct.
To my eyes, the 991 looks better proportioned. The longer WB is good and the lower height is good. I love the 997, but I think I like the 991 a little better. Have to see it for real, though.

great work. the 991 does look a tad less squat, but overall the cars look amazingly similar. the 991 looks a little bit sleeker with a more sharply raked rear roofline and I like what they did with the wheels. typically, porsche has done a great job with the 991 as they have done consistently with the car (sans the 996 IMHO) but ironically most of their other cars, with the exception of the boxster, are outright ugly. as well as the panamera drives, i cannot get over how unbelievably ugly the car is. same with the cayman.

991... visually handicapped?

I agree. It does look very nice and sleek however a big factor for me in choosing a 997.1 over the Aston Vantage was visibility. The Aston is a beautiful car from the outside but it is IMO severely visualy handicapped when driving. I hope the 991 does not have this problem.

I agree!
The visibility of 991 must not be as great... 997 visibilty is shockingly great for a sports car/

I like the overall look of the 991, but there are a few things that bother me a little about the profile. I don't care for the more bulbus curve of the headlights. Prefer the flatter look of the 997, its more in line with the 911 tradition. I also don't like the dragon fin look of the rear vents and tail. And while sleeker is normally a good thing, it moves even further away from the upright look of the classic 911.
But these are nits. All and all I do think Porsche has done a great job with the styling of the car. The only area I feel falls short is its rear end styling. The 911's *** is something I've always loved, but this car's rear has lost some of its mojo.

Just doesn't have the classic 911 look to me. It looks like they're aiming "futuristic" or perhaps a younger demographic, at least with larger wheels and such. There's no debate the interior is completely non-911

Exterior is 90% there IMO, the swooping fog lights are a bit of a miss, and the model designation in the rear is a total eye sore, but otherwise I think it's just how a re-design should have been done (I'd skip the 20inch wheels).
The interior however, specially center console, is an ABSOLUTE FAIL! It is totally GT, Panamera-like, and doesn't looks sporty AT ALL! Just look at the latest McLaren and Ferrari center console, simple, with a few race-like buttons.. something like that could have EASILY been acheived. I seriously abhor the interior and that'd be the ONLY reason I wouldn't buy the 991 in a few years.
The one BIG think we have no idea about yet, is ALL of the electronics, and SPECIALLY the electrical steering system, that to me could completelty make or break the deal, specially for folks who owned and are used to 911 steering feel.

like the lower look, but am concerned about visibility and headroom. The 997 had gobs of headroom. Also, under no circumstances do you want to look at the profile with the sunroof open... UGH!
Also don't like the protruding headlights, taillights are miniatures as well. Rear deck looks really as an afterthought in pictures. Is it just me or between the Pano and the 991 has Porsche forgotten how to design a rear of a car???
I know, nit-picking for sure, but face it; 911 owners are by and large traditionalists. Otherwise we'd be driving something more "modern" looking like an Aston, or F-car etc...
Finally, I AM SURE the car is cheaper to build and we will see incarnate evidence of that once it is in the showroom and on the street.
