P-car people will know better. But some "average joe" customers are likely to walk into the showrooms next year and see a leftover 2011 Carrera S and the all new 2012 Carrera S and wonder what gives with the power loss.

They are getting 5 more hp from the base car and 15 more hp from the 3.8

Wow. Quite a departure from past classics. The RS designation doesn't make any sense at all! I really think with this continous search for MPG improvements the 997 maybe the next 993. I really don't like the electro-hydrolic steering wheel. Will take away from thr feel.

Instead of all the new gizmos, I'd like to see a back to basics lightweight club sport version. I assume the new 3.4L engine is lighter than the current 3.6L. So start with that base version with a more traditional (non neo tech) sports car and make it even lighter. Or if they did that with the 3.8L, then at least it would be in spirit with what "RS" is suppose to mean.

The 997.2 may well become the liquid cooled era's 993. We'll have to see.
fwiw, BMW put electric power steering in their new F10 5ers and people have complained that the car is now devoid of the original "ultimate driving machine" preciseness. The F10, while softer and cushier feeling, doesn't quite have the tactile feeling of the E60 steering and suspension.

Shouldn't change the feel. It will still be hydraulic assisted steering. Only difference is the power steering pump will be driven by an electric pump. Many race cars use this technology. The idea is to reduce parasitic drag on the motor to free up horsepower and increase mpg.

The 2009's seem to have been suprisingly trouble-free so far. Haven't heard much about sooting, etc., recently (not sure if the problem was resolved or people have just accepted it).
For a car you want to drive, I tend to avoid first years of new(er) designs.
I'm open to the 2009's being an exception.

It's LIGHTER ! Yes yes yes yes.
Sounds fantastic IMO. Smaller engine, lighter, better suspension, aero, handling. That's all exactly what I would ask for.
Most sports cars these days are going more power and heavier all the time, which just sucks IMO. It sounds great on paper to say your AMG has 500 horsepower or whatever, but when it weighs 4000 pounds it's not the car for me.
