Automobile speculation on the 991
from the June issue of "Automobile" some interesting speculation over the 991.
I am hoping that the mention of a the debut of the car in "RS" trim is in fact a typo and they mean 4S, with the usual 9A1 engine options ...
interesting that they speculate that the 991 GT3 will get the RS 450 bhp engine, which begs the question what happens to the RS (perhaps the R, RSR 3.9L engine)?
I dont put a lot of store in this ... I think their speculation is about as good as ours ...

This correlates well with what I've read elsewhere too.
Instead of Carrera and Carrera S, they will now name them Carrera S and Carrera RS. This has nothing to do with GT3 or GT3RS, just a name change of their big sellers. I guess Porsche thinks they will sell more cars with RS at the back.

I cant believe they are going to dilute the "RS" brand like that ...

The article is already incorrect (I presume) in claiming that the entry level engine is a 3.4L since it is already 3.6L unless they are planning on dropping a Boxster engine in the car and increasing its output by 30bhp ...
I think they are making it up!

Thanks for posting LC!
Is it just me, or does anyone else think the 991 pictured looks like more Caymen than a Carrera? Currently, I'm not a fan of the spy photos or renderings magazines are posting.

This is actually an older photo. Seen it here or 6speed before. A recent car rag blurb I read said the next 911 will be a 2013 model and run an 8 cyl. Seems unlikely since they just spent a fortune developing the 9A1. However, one might look at the v8 that RUF is building for its next project 911. The article also said the next 911 is delayed due to VAG having to take over PAG. Who really knows what will happen next...
IMHO... They are already diluting the RS name with a GT2RS.

I suspect a good amount of BS in this side article. Porsche just came out with new engines, expect those to continue. The base Carrera probably will be 350 hp (current is 345) with minor intake and exhaust changes to the current 3.6l. Chassis code has always been 998. It is just a mildly restyled 997 with only slightly greater cosmetic changes from the 997.1 to the 997.2. Is is not whole new chassis that was originally being forecasted. They couple easily bump the HP up on the 3.8 as the x51 version makes 406 hp. They could also easily make a 4.0L (3.8L Bore with a 3.6L crank). GT3, Turbo, GT2, etc. sounds all like speculation. From history, I would expect the next turbo to be above the current Turbo S (530 hp). The new GT2 RS is already making 620 hp, so a 550 hp GT2 seems low on power. The question is if the next versions of the GT3 and GT2 will have 9A engines?

These early specs tend to be irrelevant and what's written here is so broad and vague, it's moot.
I think we have to give up on model names with Porsche -- they've really lost the plot.
The only thing I see there that I don't like is the four inch stretch in wheelbase -- that's a step away from handling towards cruising, comfort and stability. No thanks. "All new" suspension? No thanks. If they can build a 911 to handle as "perfectly" as the new RS, there's no need for "all new" suspension unless, oh yeah, the car's getting heavier and longer and handles like a Javelin (the weapon/sports equipment/70's AMC barge.) I hear the phones ringing off the hook at McLaren. What I need to hear is Mr Porsche saying lighter, shorter, narrower -- not longer, bigger and more powerful. Are they "making room" for another model to cram in-between the Carrera and the Cayman? A baby 918 supercharged v6 with electric add-on coming in about the same HP, maybe down a little from the Carrera RS, but more than base model?

The 100mm (4") wheelbase increase is a killer in my book. Up to now the 911 had 2 wheelbase increases - a very early one in the late 60s and the current one with the 996. A 4" increase makes it longer than the Cayman's wheelbase...

I wonder about the wheelbase increase. Is it to provide room for an extra cylinder on each side? A flat 8 would be NICE. More likely, a place to carry batteries for a hybrid - blech.
