Got a notice today when starting my 2017 991.2 GTS with 18,000 miles that there is a PADM fault. Says ok to drive on. What are the chances this is something in a sensor or an electrical glitch, rather than a $5k-$7k failure of the motor mounts?
Usually its the electronics that have failed. These can be repaired and future-proofed for half the cost of a new OE mount. Im in the UK but Im sure youll find a shop in the US that can do this.
I also had this issue. After a search, I found that 98% of the time it is only the sensor. There is a company called Zuffenparts that has made a sensor replacement. I had both PADM replaced with the modified sensor and havent had a problem since. This is the company and so much cheaper than the Porsche cost

I ran into this issue on my 991.1 - the engine mount looked perfectly fine, it was just the internal sensor that failed. You can email xiaoyekuangben@gmail.com - he's the guy that makes the replacement sensor you see on some of these reseller websites. His prices and instruction on how to fix are very good. I was able to do this myself (plus a friend) for about $150-200 USD all in. His youtube is here:
I was able to change the sensor while the engine mount was still installed in the car - only tricky part was keeping the fluid from coming out. I just used the finger of a latex glove stuffed with a paper towel to plug the hole and keep the fluid from leaking out while changing the sensor (worked really well).
I purchased an icarsoft POR v4 and ran diagnostics. Got the error code C12096. Is this consistent with the sensor failure or the failure of the entire unit?

That doesn't sound like a PADM fault code. Pretty easy to Google... There is no way to tell from the code if it's the sensor or the unit, you have to take the rear bumper off and inspect for fluid leaking out of the mounts. If the mount looks normal it's the sensor... Usually the PADM code will indicate which side is faulty right or left
