Hi all -- I've always heard that the Porsche threshold is 1 quart per 1000 miles, but I was wondering how much oil consumtion you are getting on your 991.1 GTS. I use my GTS mostly for weekend fun in country roads (so mid/intensive use, playing in the 3k-6k rpm range). I'd say mine drops 1 bar in the electronic oil level gauge every 600 miles / 1,000 km or so. How about yours? Is that something to worry about?
Intermediate
I changed the oil on my 991.1 C4S at 66k miles in July, the car currently has 67.4k miles and the oil level is the same. I occasionally shift at higher (4-6k) RPMs when i'm by myself but when I have my wife/kids in the car I tend to granny it lol.
I haven't owned a 911 with the 9A1 engine, but I've owned a 997.1 with the M97 engine and currently own a 991.2 with the 9A2 engine. My 997 burned about a liter of oil every ~1,500 miles, and my 991 burns virtually no oil.
The key with 911 oil consumption is consistency. If it's dropping slightly every ~600 miles, I'd say you're fine. A large spike in oil consumption can point to a potential problem (failing AOS, bore scoring, etc.) so it's always wise to monitor oil consumption but it doesn't sound like you have anything to worry about.

I've driven a 991.1 C4S to 140K miles with no oil consumption and my current 991.2 has 80K miles with no oil consumption.
What type and weight of oil are you using. For me I'm using Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w40

The Porsche dealer uses the standard Mobil1 0W-40, as it is still under official warranty. How do you use the car? Highway cruising or toy mode? Originally Posted by CSK 911 C4S

Mine is not a GTS, a simple 3.4 NA Base with 120k miles. I do my own oil changes every 3k miles and monitor it religiously. I drop 1 tick mark on the electronic gauge at exactly 2000 miles every time, like 1/4 liter per 2k miles. I drive her hard and hit redline every drive. The tolerances may differ on every car and the total consumed oil is not the main concern as long as it's within specs, but you should be watching for a change in the consumption. If you notice the consumption increase you may have something to consider. Originally Posted by JLCarrera

I live in middle TN but work in Atlanta .... I'm I'm pretty close to the North GA mountains so I run the twisties a few times a year with groups or weekends when the need arises.

I would be a bit worried, or at least have it checked out.Originally Posted by JLCarrera

My 2015 GTS uses zero oil, bars have never dropped in the 30k miles I have put on it. It’s a weekend toy.

what’s your driving style? That seems odd to me, even my 981 drops a bar every once in a while Originally Posted by uphoto

I may lose one segment or less in about 5K miles, that is about 1/3 of a quart.
I measure my oil via graduates at every oil change. I do not rely on the sensor display. My consumption is under about 200 cc in 2000 mi, my limit of measurement. 2019 C4 GTS, and I drive hard on the backroads but have about 50% "Costco runs" as well, 2 to 3K mi/year.

Is changed yearly. 15k miles 2012.5. Never burned a drop. When I change its almost always exactly the same in out. Motul excess gen2, oem brand filter. Any smoke ? A borescope and leak down will tell for sure but even a little scoring does not kill these engines.

it is. Every engine consumes some oil. The quantity consumption is what matters, and any change in consumption indicates a change internally that should be considered. Porsche states the range of normal consumption at a staggering upper limit of a liter per 1000 KM or Miles, can't remember. I think that is excessive, that's likely oil making it past an oil ring with loose tolerances. I do not believe those saying they've not consumed a drop, perhaps it's just imperceptible, but a running engine moves oil all around and some doesn't return to the sump. And consumption doesn't necessarily mean burning oil, or even leaking, some oil exits the PCV valve into the AOS and is redirected to the intake, unless you have a catch can (it's existence itself is proof that some oil does not return to the sump.) Also, the electronic gauge isn't perfect or very precise. I measure my recaptured oil to ensure it's consistent. Originally Posted by JLCarrera
