Default Digital Rearview Mirror

Has anyone installed a digital rearview mirror on their 991? This is what I'm talking about. https://a.co/d/7iYRxYG

If so, where did you install the rear facing camera? On the inside? Outside? If you've got pictures, please post them.

FWIW, I installed one made by that manufacturer in my 4C and it worked really well.

I wouldn't install it on the outside of a 911, since it's a losing game of tradeoffs between looking weird/out of place, immediately getting dirty and becoming useless, or being at an angle that is objectively worse than just using a normal mirror.

if the problem you are trying to solve is having a front/rear dash cam, there are better products out there that do specifically that without having to remove your rear view mirror.

Have you actually had a car with one of these?

I have a new Defender with a factory “clearsight” mirror and there are 3 big downsides to these mirrors:

1) If you’re a bit older, your eyes have a heck of a time adjusting (focal length or something) between looking straight ahead and at the screen. Serious problem for me. As a result I just use the mirror as a mirror, not a screen.
2) in the rain, the camera mists over. And everything looks foggy. And the Defender’s has an anti “rain” anti “fog” coating on the camera lens
3) in the night, halo’s are around all light sources, and the Defender clear sight camera has, from what I read, a best in class camera powering this thing

In other words, it seems cool but in practice I still think that a plain old mirror is better.

The one big plus is when I’m packed up for long offroad or family trips, and the back of the truck is filled to the brim, and I would not normally have rear view vision, I can still have rear vision because of the camera. That’s it. You would not have that issue in a 991. I don’t think most people pack their 991’s to the roof.

@asellus ... you bring up a point I should have mentioned initially. The issue I'm having is that my rear tint is pretty dark. It's difficult to see and I think having a digital rear view mirror will solve that problem. It's going to require cutting some tint but the opening should be covered by the camera itself. I think you're right about how out of place it will look if I install the camera outside.
